Interview with Luke Patrick
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I really enjoyed working with one particular YouTuber. The track I produced for him is a favorite of mine.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I have a few small projects, but I'm hoping to get more through SoundBetter.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm new to SoundBetter right now, but I'd check out the pro mixers. I give you a quality mix, but they make the mix their entire occupation.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Digital is portable and sounds good, and analog is iconic and sounds better.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I want to help further the telling of your story. Whatever it takes.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the creative process!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Some people think it's only a few people who have exceptional skills and never went to music school who can make a good soundtrack. That's just not the case. Anyone who wants to can learn and make incredible music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I want to know the age rating of the film. I don't want to work on an R-rated slasher or something with profanity.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Give us guidelines, but the best work comes about when we're asked "So what do you think." We're professional storytellers, too.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A computer, Cubase, Albion One, an audio interface, and a mic. I'd record the sounds of the desert island, warp them into synths, and lay that under an epic orchestral track.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been playing piano for about 7 years and composing for about 4 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I compose in a style that blends classical orchestration with synths and unconventional techniques. I also like dropping some pop-style stuff in every once and a while.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to collaborate with Hans Zimmer, maybe on some sort of experimental piano or something.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Finish your tracks. It's fine to go around your session and come up with a bunch of seemingly incompatible ideas, but the real genius of scoring comes when you combine those seemingly incompatible ideas into something that flows.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on orchestral tracks, but also pop-style background tracks.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am an advanced pianist, and I use my experience to write music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have a passion for creating unique music in the classical genre. I believe that music is an essential part to storytelling.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically look at the video/film to get the project vibe, and then get right to composing. When I have some good ideas down, I'll go through them and sync them to the picture.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I working with Cubase on a PC right now. I use several different sample libraries to bring the best quality to my production.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and John Powell are huge inspirations in what I do.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
