I am passionate about music, and I love collaborating with artists to create something that truly resonates with their audience.
Throughout my career, I have worked with a wide variety of artists, each with their own unique style and sound. Interview with Khalid Guifrhi
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I take pride in every project I work on and am always committed to providing the highest quality of sound possible. Whether it's working with an up-and-coming artist to produce their debut EP, or collaborating with an established musician to mix and master their latest album, I am always focused on helping my clients achieve their creative vision and sharing in their success. Each project is unique and presents its own set of challenges, which is what makes this work so rewarding and fulfilling.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am always committed to honing my skills and staying up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques in the industry. Whether it's experimenting with new equipment or software, networking with other professionals, or simply practicing my craft, I am always working to improve my abilities and provide the best possible service to my clients.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: However, I encourage my clients to do their research and carefully review the profiles and portfolios of potential providers to find the best fit for their specific needs and goals. It's important to communicate clearly with any provider to ensure that they understand your vision and have the skills and experience necessary to bring it to life. Ultimately, the most important factor is finding a provider who you feel comfortable working with and who is committed to helping you achieve your creative vision.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: As a sound engineer, I believe that both analog and digital technologies have their place in the recording and production process. While analog equipment can provide a warmth and character that is difficult to replicate digitally, digital technologies offer a level of precision and flexibility that is unmatched by analog. Ultimately, the choice between analog and digital depends on the specific needs and goals of the project, as well as the personal preferences of the artist and engineer. I am committed to using the best possible tools and techniques for each project, regardless of whether they are analog or digital, in order to achieve the highest quality of sound possible.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: my promise to my clients is to provide the highest quality of service possible, from start to finish. This means collaborating closely with them to understand their vision and goals for the project, using the best possible equipment and techniques to achieve the desired sound, and working tirelessly to ensure that the final product is of the highest quality possible. I am committed to clear and open communication throughout the process, and to making sure that my clients are completely satisfied with the end result. Ultimately, my goal is to help my clients achieve their creative vision and create music that they are proud of.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: what I like most about my job is the creative and collaborative aspect of working with artists to bring their musical vision to life. I enjoy the process of problem-solving and experimentation that goes into crafting a great sound, as well as the satisfaction of hearing the final product come together. I also appreciate the opportunity to work with a diverse range of musicians and styles, and to constantly learn and grow as a professional. Ultimately, what I love most about my job is the ability to contribute to the creation of music that moves and inspires people.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: customers most commonly ask me questions related to the technical aspects of music production, such as what types of microphones and software I use, how I approach mixing and mastering, and how I manage different tracks and instruments in a recording. They also often ask about my experience and background in the industry, as well as my rates and availability. In response, I try to be as transparent and informative as possible, providing detailed information about my equipment, techniques, and experience, and explaining my approach to each project. I also make sure to answer any questions or concerns the customer may have, and provide clear and accurate estimates for my services. Ultimately, my goal is to help customers feel confident and comfortable working with me, and to provide the best possible results for their musical projects.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I believe the biggest misconception about what I do is that my job is simply to press buttons and make things sound good. In reality, my work involves a complex blend of technical knowledge, creative vision, and interpersonal skills. I collaborate closely with artists to bring their musical ideas to life, using a wide range of tools and techniques to achieve the desired sound and mood. I also work tirelessly to ensure that the final product is of the highest quality possible, which often involves hours of careful listening, fine-tuning, and critical analysis. Overall, my job as a sound engineer is a multifaceted and challenging one, requiring a deep understanding of both the technical and artistic aspects of music production.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask prospective clients a range of questions to help me understand their goals and needs for the project. Some of the questions I might ask include: What is your musical background and experience? What is your vision for this project? What is your budget and timeline for the project? What are your specific technical requirements or preferences for the recording and production process? What are some of your favorite recordings or artists that you would like to use as a reference for this project? By asking these and other questions, I can get a better sense of the client's needs and goals and tailor my approach to best serve them.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: my advice to customers looking to hire a provider like me is to do their research and ask questions. It's important to find an engineer who has experience and expertise in the specific genre or style of music that you're working on, as well as someone who is professional, reliable, and easy to communicate with. Don't be afraid to ask for references or listen to samples of their previous work, and be clear about your goals and expectations for the project. Finally, make sure you have a clear understanding of the engineer's rates, timeline, and any other logistics before moving forward with the project. By taking the time to find the right provider and setting clear expectations from the outset, you can help ensure a successful and rewarding collaboration.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, I would choose a high-quality microphone, a reliable laptop with music production software, a portable audio interface, a pair of studio-quality headphones, and a powerful battery pack to keep everything running. With these tools, I would be able to record and produce music, mix and master tracks, and even collaborate with other musicians remotely. While it's not an ideal situation, having these essential pieces of gear would allow me to continue creating music and pursuing my passion, even in the most challenging circumstances.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my career by studying audio engineering and music production in college. After graduation, I landed an internship at a recording studio, which led to a full-time position as an assistant engineer. Over the years, I worked my way up to become a lead engineer and eventually started my own freelance business. I have been working as a professional sound engineer for over a decade now, and during that time, I have had the opportunity to work with many talented artists and musicians. I continue to learn and grow in my craft, always striving to improve my skills and stay on top of the latest trends and technologies in music production.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as collaborative, detail-oriented, and always focused on achieving the artist's vision for the project. I believe that the best recordings are created through a partnership between the artist and the engineer, and I strive to build a strong working relationship with each client. I pay close attention to the technical and creative details of the recording process, ensuring that every element of the song is perfectly balanced and polished. My ultimate goal is to help the artist create a recording that is authentic, powerful, and emotionally resonant.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: there are many artists I would love to work with, but if I had to choose one, it would be Björk. She is an incredibly innovative and creative artist who pushes the boundaries of music and technology. Her music is often complex and challenging, but always emotionally resonant and deeply moving. I would relish the opportunity to work with her and learn from her approach to music production and creativity.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One music production tip I always share with my clients is to take breaks during the recording process. It's important to step away from the music and give your ears a break every once in a while, as listening to the same sound for an extended period of time can lead to ear fatigue and a loss of objectivity. Taking short breaks can help you stay fresh and focused, and ultimately result in a better recording.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on a wide variety of music genres, ranging from pop and rock to hip-hop and electronic music. I believe that every genre has its unique challenges and opportunities, and I enjoy the diversity that comes with working on different types of music. Whether it's a stripped-down acoustic ballad or a complex electronic track, my goal is always to help the artist or band achieve their creative vision and create a recording that resonates with their audience.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: As a sound engineer, I believe that my strongest skill is my ability to understand the unique creative vision of each artist or band I work with, and translate that vision into a recording that truly captures their essence. I work closely with my clients to understand their goals and aspirations for the project, and use my technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills to help them achieve those goals. I'm also constantly learning and staying up-to-date on the latest tools and techniques in my field, which helps me deliver the highest-quality recordings possible. Ultimately, my goal is to help my clients achieve their musical dreams and create recordings that they can be proud of for years to come.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: As a sound engineer, I bring technical expertise, creative problem-solving skills, and a keen ear for detail to a song. I work to enhance the clarity, balance, and emotional impact of the recording, while also ensuring that it meets the technical standards required for release. Ultimately, my goal is to help the artist or band achieve their vision for the song and create a recording that they can be proud of.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: As a sound engineer, my typical work process is designed to ensure that I am able to deliver high-quality, release-ready recordings to my clients. While the specifics of my process may vary depending on the project and client needs, I generally follow these steps: Pre-production: Before I start recording, I like to spend time with the artist or band to discuss their vision for the project and get a sense of the sound they are trying to achieve. This may involve reviewing demos, discussing instrumentation and arrangements, and identifying any potential issues that may arise during the recording process. Recording: Once the pre-production process is complete, I move on to recording the tracks. This involves setting up the recording space, selecting the appropriate microphones, and capturing the performances of the artists or musicians. During the recording process, I pay close attention to the technical aspects of the recording (such as levels and mic placement), as well as the artistic elements (such as the dynamics and emotional impact of the performance). Editing: After the recordings are complete, I move on to the editing process. This involves trimming the audio files, aligning the timing of the tracks, and ensuring that everything is in tune and in time. I also take care to remove any unwanted background noise or artifacts that may have been picked up during the recording process. Mixing: Once the tracks are edited, I begin the mixing process. This involves balancing the levels of each track, applying EQ, compression, and other effects to shape the sound of each element, and creating a cohesive overall mix. During the mixing process, I work closely with the artist to ensure that their vision for the project is being realized. Mastering: After the mix is complete, I move on to the mastering process. This involves applying a final set of EQ, compression, and other effects to the mix to ensure that it sounds consistent and balanced across different playback systems. I also create a final master file that is ready for distribution. Overall, my work process is designed to be flexible, collaborative, and focused on delivering the best possible results for my clients.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is built around my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), which is the central hub for all of my audio recording, editing, and mixing needs. I use Logic Pro as my primary DAW, but I'm also proficient in Pro Tools and Ableton Live, depending on the project and client needs. In addition to my DAW, I have invested in high-quality hardware and software tools to ensure that I am able to deliver top-notch recordings to my clients. This includes a range of audio interfaces, preamps, and outboard gear, which I use to connect microphones, instruments, and other audio sources to my computer. I also have a variety of software effects processors and virtual instruments that allow me to shape and enhance the sound of my recordings. To monitor my audio accurately, I have a set of high-quality studio monitors, which are designed to provide a flat and accurate frequency response. I also use a set of professional-grade headphones to check the details of my mix and ensure that every element of the recording is balanced and present in the final mix. When it comes to microphones, I have a variety of options to choose from depending on the project and the type of sound that the artist is looking for. This includes dynamic and condenser microphones, as well as specialty microphones such as ribbon mics and stereo mic setups. Overall, I have built my studio setup to be versatile, reliable, and capable of delivering the highest-quality recordings possible. I am constantly upgrading and refining my setup to ensure that I am able to meet the needs of my clients and deliver exceptional results every time.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a sound engineer, I find inspiration from a variety of musicians and music production professionals who have made significant contributions to the industry. There are many individuals who have inspired me over the years, but I'll highlight a few here: Firstly, I have a great deal of respect for Rick Rubin, a legendary producer who has worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry. I admire his ability to bring out the best in each artist he works with and his commitment to creating authentic, honest recordings that capture the essence of the music. Another musician who inspires me is Quincy Jones, a prolific producer and arranger who has worked with everyone from Michael Jackson to Frank Sinatra. I am inspired by his ability to seamlessly blend different genres and styles of music, as well as his commitment to mentoring and supporting young musicians. I also find inspiration from more contemporary producers and engineers such as Dave Pensado and Chris Lord-Alge, who have both made significant contributions to the industry through their innovative approaches to mixing and mastering. Of course, there are countless other musicians and music production professionals who inspire me, each with their own unique style and approach to creating music. What I find most inspiring about all of these individuals is their passion for music and their commitment to constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the studio.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: When I receive a track from an artist, my first step is to listen to it carefully and identify any issues or areas that could be improved. This might include adjusting the EQ, compression, or levels of individual instruments or vocals. I will also work to ensure that the track has a balanced sound and that each element is blended seamlessly with the others. Throughout the mixing process, I work closely with the artist to understand their creative vision and ensure that I am delivering a mix that meets their expectations. I understand that every artist and song is unique, so I take the time to tailor my approach to suit their specific needs. Once I have completed the mix, I will usually send it to the artist for their feedback. If there are any changes or adjustments that they would like me to make, I will do my best to accommodate their requests and ensure that they are happy with the final product. In short, the most common type of work I do for my clients is mixing their songs. By using my technical expertise and creativity, I work to enhance the quality of their recordings and create a polished, release-ready mix that captures the essence of their music.
