Interview with MikeJProduction
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently wrote, arranged, recorded, mixed, and mastered my latest single "Solstice". It's my proudest work to date. It's a combination of Acoustic and Electric-led instrumental with highly advanced techniques and engaging melody. The crafting of the story and narrative throughout the song will keep the listeners engaged from the first note to last. You can hear this in my 'Sample Audio' on my profile.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Next project will be producing and recording a couple original songs as well as mixing them as part of this year's project with my group "Acts Music" in Thailand.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. The convenience of having an incredibly powerful tool right in your software makes it easy to get great results. Analog definitely has its charms, and I would love the opportunity to work with more analog gear in the future.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Will delivery high quality results and on time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Hearing the finish product and being moved by it as a results of my work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the story or underline emotion behind this song that would help me understand in order to best produce the desired result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Mix engineers can make everything sound good and fix all the recording problems. Truth is, we cannot take something bad and turn it into something amazing. To get great sound, we must work with good resources.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be careful during the recording stage, focus on producing the best result for your song(s). Such as: Capture your audio at an appropriate level on your meter (between -12 or -10 dB). Use a pop-shield for your vocals. Be careful of bleed in your microphones from things such as metronome or backing track. Remember, great results come from good recordings.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am working to be able to make a living in the music industry full-time, started out heavily focused on the electric guitarist, which was such a joy. Having performed and toured in the UK, I have moved back to Thailand. I've been working as a producer over the last 6 years, with the last 3 years doing it as a profession.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Keeping it simple. I try not to over-complicated things when I work, which results in a functioning and effective workflow and solutions to issues I may face along the way.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Cory Wong. I am a big fan of his music and very unique sound. His current band recently have some of the best players which includes brass instruments, a fresh combination when it comes to guitar led music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Every great song starts with good recordings. Get it right at the source, miking, gain staging, room.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Anything revolving around a band context and your typical instruments (vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion, drums, etc.). Singer-songwriter, pop, rock, instrumental, etc.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am a musician at heart first and foremost, having completed my masters degree in music performance from the University of West London, England. I have over a decade of experience in band and live performance scenario, therefore I know how to speak the music language, I know how music works, how performance works.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Production: A dedicated individual who takes pride in delivering the best results through production. Who understands the love and pride that goes behind writing and recording a song. Recording: The expertise in my craft from countless hours of dedication to the development of my craft. Experiences in live, sessions AND studio work, having shared my skills in many different countries and continents around the globe.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Having received all recorded files, I will begin mix prep, running through the material, identifying any issues, or highlight any key arrangements. Start the mix process, after which I would leave for a time before returning to asses the work and apply any necessary adjustments in order to work with a fresh perspective. After I'm happy with the mix, I move on to the mastering process before submitting the final product to the client for inspection.
