Interview with Matthieu Barbe
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a soundtrack for Netflix.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. Digital. Digital. Because it's 2024.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Often, musicians think I do the producer's job. But I'm a mixer!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just try. I'm quite cheap.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop, a soundcard, and good headphone.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: It's been more than 20 years I do this job. My goal is working on a big movie's production.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Respectful.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Probably Dua Lipa, I really love her work and the way her music is produced.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't forget the phase, and less is more.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electro, Cinematic, Synthpop, Synthwave, Hyperpop, Trap, Rap, Electropop...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Automation, because it's the thing I do to make your song alive.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to put more space and more air... I respect a lot the way you hear your sound and spend time on talking about your artistic direction.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I spend a lot of time on balancing a track. Less is more... If you produced correctly your track, I don't want to distort your work. Then I try to correct things that don't fit.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work 100% ITB. Mostly on Studio One and Protools, with a Quantum soundcard and a Lavry converter. I work with the complete suite of Plugin Alliance plugins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Fab Dupont, Max Martin, Bastien Burger
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
