Mayank on SoundBetter

A progressive/melodic house music producer, Been making records in this space for over 6 years. I write in Ableton using go to synths Omnisphere, Diva, Serum, Repro, Kontakt libraries along with in the box and external FX/creative plug-ins.

Hey! My name is Mayank. I produce electronic music, specifically Progressive and Melodic house inspired by labels such as Sudbeat, Lost & Found, Replug, The Soundgarden, Anjunadeep, among many others. Had releases on industry labels such as Freegrant, Balkan Connection/Balkan Connection South America, Electronic Tree, Superordinate, Capital Heaven etc. I've been producing for over 6 years taking on all the roles of the life cycle of completing a record i.e. creation, mixing, engineering, and mastering.

If you are looking to learn how to make these genres of electronic music that encompass groovy basslines over percussive hooks sitting on top of ethereal chord progressions with textures/pads complimenting top line melodies, I'd be more than happy to share what I've learnt over the years. We could start with a blank project, review a project you're working on, or whichever method that would give you the most value in terms of what you're looking to learn.

Interview with Mayank

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The track posted on my profile. I finally got to making this record as I had envisioned it and it got signed to one of my dream record labels :)

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both :) Analog provides the capability to play around and come up with ideas that you ordinarily wouldn't come up with drawing automation lanes. VSTs are more accessible, affordable and come pretty close to the analog sound these days.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will share every thing I have learned in my years of producing and hope it helps you achieve your goals in the studio.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Being creative and using music to tell a story.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: What's the best way to get signed to your dream label? Understand the sound of the label, and use it a reference but don't try to copy other Producers on the label.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That making electronic music is easy

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What level of Producer would you consider yourself at and what DAW do you use?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: If you have a loop that you've created and are feeling, finish the project to a full a track, before starting another one. Learning how to complete a project will teach you quicker about production as opposed having multiple unfinished projects.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: Working on 2 active projects. One in the style of Outta Limits, the other of Sudbeat.

  19. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  20. A: Jesse Freedland(Staysis)

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My PC, Ableton, headphones, a Moog Sub 37, some hardware form of Omnisphere :)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Have always been DJing since the early 2000s. Being introduced to the early sounds of Trance in this era, fell in live with melodies built over electronic music. Slowly transitioned into Progressive House. I started producing in 2014, got my first release in 2016. Been at since then, perfecting the craft of production and finding my own personal unique sound that in a way combines the sounds of the labels I'm inspired by i.e. Sudbeat, Soundgarden, Lost & Found, Meanwhile, Anjunadeep, among many others.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Melodic, groovy, atmospheric, serene, progressive, deep, ambient.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Dream artist to work with in Guy J. Because he has this unparalled way of creating records that capture the listener on a 8-10 minute journey using carefully created top loops and unique FX, with constantly evolving atmospheric melodies.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Using bit crushers carefully on your leads to make them stick out in the mix

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Progressive and Melodic House

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Seeing through to the end the life cycle of a 16 bar loop into a fully done 6-7 minute track

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: The ability to fuse ambience and ethereal atmospheres and melodic hooks with solid head moving progressive house grooves.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Building a track from scratch, depending on the creative zone, starting with a melodic hook/chord progression, drums revolving around a progressive house groove

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Ableton Live 11, 2 KRK Rokit 5, 1 Adam Audio TS10, Seinheiser Wired 650 headphones, Komplete Audio 6, Novation Launchkey 25, Diva, Omnisphere, Serum, Sylenth1, Arturia pack, Soundtoys bundle, Waves bundle

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
