Interview with Timo Böger
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm super proud of the song 'missing me' by JULIKO! We met last summer and wrote the song in about one day, I composed and produced it, she wrote the top line and lyrics and is also the vocalist on the song! We are good friends ever since and I'm blessed to have her in my team as a songwriter! I'm also proud of the project with the super talented artist Marigo Bay, the song is called 'tears will dry'. It was my first song where I tried something new, something different, an experimental mix between pop and down tempo future bass with vocal chops and granular chords.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently I'm working for a small studio in my city for some clients and I'm working on my first ever album! :)
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet, because I'm new!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: For me personally digital, because I have everything I need on my MacBook and I can work everywhere I want. Analog gear definitely has it's own character, but nowadays the modern digital versions and create even cooler atmospheres and you have endless ways to combine them!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will give 110% to make you happy and satisfied, music is a universal language that connects people and this will be always in the foreground!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music is my life and will always be! I like to work with other people, listen to new songs, sounds and ideas daily and it's always a new challenge for me making every customer happy as an individual!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Mixing is NOT Mastering! These are two completely different stages, same goes for processing/editing and mixing!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When do you want the product to be finished? (deadline) How many stems willl you send me? What exactly do you need? processing? mixing? mastering? What is your budget for the job? Can you provide at least 2 reference tracks that fit to your style?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: always provide at least 2 reference tracks. be patient, we don't want to rush your order, we both want the best possible result and good things take time :) you should have a vision and a goal with your song, otherwise you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars for a professional sounding mix if it's just sitting on your pc storage. Communication is key! Let us know what you want and need as detailed as possible, this could save us hours of time!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: MacBook, Audio Interface, Headphones, 2x Studio Speakers
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: - started making music when I was 10 years old - played a couple instruments - got serious about understanding how processing of sounds works in 2016 - having releases on labels like TeamWrk Records (Masked Wolf) - finished diploma degree as audio engineer in 2023 for mix & mastering
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: punchy, pushing, warm and wide
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The Chainsmokers! I'm a huge fan of Drew and Alex, theire music (especially the story telling) inspires me everyday and they seem like pretty humble guys :)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Gain Staging is probably the most helpful thing, every plug-in needs a perfected matched input volume to process the signal, with that known, you'll receive a pretty balanced mix without even touching the mixer faders first.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Future Pop, Electronic Pop, Pop in general
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing crispy drums and processing vocals!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A fresh mind and lots of motivation, I'm super excited to work with many talented people out there and I'm always open minded for new things! For sure I'm also bringing high quality equipment and a large range of professional plug-ins with me.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I'm not only a professional but also a music lover, so when I get to work, first I'm catching the vibe and the scene that the song is giving me. I start listening to the whole song and take some notes, trying to figure out the weak points of the mix and fix them one by one. After that, I'm comparing it to a reference track for the first time and adjust the differences. Finally giving it some unique flavor with my personal post mixing chain, making the song ready for the mastering.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Just a pretty simple homestudio Yamaha HS8 Apollo Twin II Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 ohm
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The Chainsmokers, Lauv, NOTD, blackbear, Loote, Tate McRae, ILLENIUM
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
