Interview with Tom Zalezny/Oxygn
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: laptop full of sounds, mic, interface, midi controller and headphones :)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing this full time for the past 6 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Analog warm sounding contemporary music :)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Your low end should sound great already in early production stage! Change a sample or bass sound if required!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, soul, house music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Whatever it needs :) Appropriate balance, depth and clarity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start with creating groups and first thing I due is sorting out a low end. Relation between kick drum and bass is the most important thing in a song. One's I have that sorted out I start to mix vocals and then I add chords and melodies.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is based on powerful Mac Studio, Apollo X8p interface along with Twin and 2 UAD Satellites. I use ATC SCM25A Pro for monitoring and SPL Mixdream for analog summing as I love mixing and producing in hybrid setup, it just sounds so wide and clear! For production I have a lot of analog gear like Prophet REV2, Yamaha DX7 synth, Akai MPC One, incredible Piano Rhodes mk2, Farfusa vip 500 vintage organs and Yamaha B2 piano. For recording I use UA Sphere L22 mics.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I really love Jack Antonoff's work. Very analog and warm sounding. I have exactly the same approach I'll always place analog gear over the soft instruments.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually do two types of work - music production and mixing. I recently shifted more into mixing and feel very confident about it. Recently a Grammy Award Winning Mastering Engineer Dan Millice said that my mixes sound great!
