Interview with Roland Gjernes
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm perhaps most proud of my work on the gorgeous video game score, Wildmender, by Andrés Soto. The music really enhances the landscape and features of the game - which is exploratory in nature. I love the feeling of discovery and awe, and I think my playing, in addition to the great writing by Andrés, really brings that out.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love connecting with people most. If my music/playing can convey joy or some vein of emotion to another person, then I feel like my job has been done. And it always makes me feel good when clients are in love with the tracks I'm able to provide.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as detailed and effusive. I like getting into the nitty-gritty of a score, and bringing out the most emotion from the music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Surprisingly, towels are an incredibly efficient means of sound dampening. If I'm in a space where reflections are bad, towels are the most effective at reducing that. It seems cheap, I know, but it works!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm often asked to provide cello tracks to a soundtrack cue, or features in albums. Usually I'll have a click track and reference track to record over. And often, I'm multi-tracking, or adding multiple cello layers to a track.
