Collaborating with Stephen was an absolute joy. He's truly a musician's musician and a songwriter's songwriter. Stephen's exquisitely written and self-produced song moved me deeply and challenged me as a bassist. Thank you, Stephen, for entrusting me with your remarkable song and I can't wait for the next one!
Interview with James Walker
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I am especially proud of is my forthcoming full-length. As a fully self-realized work, it was a challenge to get right and so rewarding to see it come together. Being the producer, performer, mixer, and mastering engineer, I was responsible for every single element of the track, and it's thrilling to have the ability to steer the project in exactly the direction I envisioned from the outset. It's an exploration of a grittier and more analogue sound that I've been eager to experiment with. It required careful attention to detail, as well as a nuanced understanding of how to best serve the emotive essence with each instrumental addition, each production decision. This project has been an enormous source of personal and professional growth. It's both a testament to my abilities as a fully-rounded music creator and a stepping stone into more self-produced and self-performed works in the future.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Adam Lee and Isaac Wriston.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid! Both have their pros and cons. Analogue tone, digital flexibility and forgiveness.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Understanding and Respect: I promise to take the time to understand your vision, respect your creative ideas, and treat your project as if it were my own. I will listen intently, ask for clarity when needed, and ensure that your creative voice leads the process. Quality and Professionalism: I promise to deliver a world-class production that meets and exceeds your expectations. I'll leverage my expertise, use high-quality gear and software, and apply my deep understanding of music and production techniques to give your music the polish it deserves. Open and Clear Communication: I promise to keep the lines of communication open throughout the project. You'll be kept in the loop every step of the way, with ample opportunities for feedback and revisions. Ultimately, my promise is to make your music the best it can be, to make the process enjoyable and fulfilling, and to deliver a final product that you're proud to share with the world.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is the magic of creating something new. There's an indescribable thrill in taking a raw idea and shaping it into a complete, polished song that resonates with listeners. I find immense joy in every step of the process - from the initial brainstorming, to the collaborative back-and-forth with the artist, to the final mix and master. Another aspect I deeply enjoy is the opportunity to collaborate with diverse artists from all walks of life. I get to immerse myself in their unique visions, stories, and styles, and that continuous learning and growth is incredibly fulfilling. Lastly, the moment when an artist hears the final product and their vision comes to life - there's nothing quite like it. Knowing that I've played a part in helping an artist realize their creative goals is incredibly rewarding. The opportunity to contribute to the music community in this way is truly a privilege.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: As a music producer, here are some of the most common questions I get asked by clients, along with my typical responses: How long will it take to complete my project? The timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the project, the number of songs, and the specific services needed. I like to have a detailed conversation upfront about your needs and timeline to provide a more accurate estimate. Can you make my song sound like [specific artist or song]? While I can certainly use other songs as a reference point to understand your desired sound, my goal is to create a track that's uniquely yours. I strive to combine your influences with your own style to create a sound that's fresh and authentically you. How much will it cost to produce my song/EP/album? Similar to the question about timeline, the cost can vary depending on the specifics of the project. Once I understand your needs better, I can provide a more accurate quote. Can we make changes once the production is complete? Absolutely. My approach is highly collaborative, and your satisfaction is my top priority. I'm open to revisions to ensure the final product aligns with your vision. Do I need to come to your studio, or can we work remotely? While in-person sessions can be valuable, we can definitely work remotely, especially given the current global circumstances. Thanks to technology, I've successfully completed many projects remotely, communicating with clients via video calls and sharing files online.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about being a music producer is that our role is purely technical. While it's true that a large part of what we do involves technical skills like mixing, mastering, and sound design, we also play a crucial role in the creative process. This involves working closely with artists to understand their vision, shaping the arrangement and structure of the song, and often contributing to the songwriting process itself. Moreover, we often act as emotional translators, using our technical skills to bring out the underlying emotions of a song and make it resonate with listeners. We're not just technicians, but creative partners who can bring an outside perspective and contribute to the artistic vision of the project. Another misconception is that a producer imposes their own style onto every project. In reality, a good producer adapts to the needs of each song and artist, using their skills to enhance the artist's original vision, not overshadow it. This versatility is a key aspect of what I bring to the table, drawing on my diverse experiences across genres and roles to serve each unique project.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's your vision for the project? This helps me understand what you're looking to achieve and the direction you want for your music. Do you have any reference tracks or artists? These can provide a valuable insight into your musical taste and the sound you're aiming for. What's the story or emotion behind the song? Understanding the narrative or emotional core of your song helps me produce in a way that enhances and amplifies that feeling. What are the technical specifics of your project? For instance, do you need production from scratch, or do you have tracks that need mixing and mastering? Do you need songwriting or arrangement assistance? What's your deadline? Knowing your timeline helps me ensure that I can deliver the project when you need it, and manage my schedule effectively. What's your budget? Understanding your budget up front ensures that we’re on the same page when it comes to project costs. How do you prefer to communicate during the project? This helps me understand your preferred style of collaboration. Are you more comfortable with frequent check-ins, or do you prefer more autonomy in the creative process?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know Your Vision: Before you start your search, have a clear idea of what you want your music to sound like. This can include reference tracks, specific elements you want in your music, or the emotional feel you're aiming for. This will help you find a producer who aligns with your vision and can bring it to life. Communication is Key: A good working relationship is built on clear and open communication. Make sure you're able to express your ideas, concerns, and feedback openly. The right producer will be open, accepting, and approachable, fostering a space where you feel comfortable sharing your creative thoughts. Look for Versatility: Each song is unique, and it's important to find a producer who can adapt to your specific needs. A versatile producer can navigate different genres and styles, and have a wide range of skills - from songwriting, to arrangement, to mixing and mastering. Don't Overlook Emotional Understanding: Technical proficiency is important, but a producer's ability to understand and enhance the emotional resonance of your music is equally important. Look for someone who values the story and feeling behind your music.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A desert island with a power supply, hopefully! - Laptop - Apollo - Manley Ref Gold - Gibson ES - MIDI Keys
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started off a session musician nearly thirteen years ago, performing across Europe with Matt Simons, Chris Ayer and Adam Barnes. From then on, I toured full time as a solo artist and session performer, at over 1,250 shows worldwide. Along the way I met many inspiring artists who shaped the creative I am today.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Passionate and emotional.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I want to learn from so many current producers; Kučka, Beau Nox, but also I want to work with some really phenomenal vocalists like Yebba and Durand Bernarr.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get the performance right at the source! It's easy to get lost in the endless quest for the 'perfect' sound. While technical proficiency is important, it's crucial not to lose sight of what truly makes a song connect with listeners: its emotional resonance. Sometimes, the technically 'perfect' choice might not be the one that serves the song best. A slightly off-beat drum hit, a raw vocal take, or a less-than-perfect guitar solo can sometimes carry more emotional weight than a flawless, but sterile, recording. The key is to keep the emotional intent of the song in mind throughout the production process. Always ask yourself: Does this choice enhance the feeling I'm trying to convey? If the answer is yes, it's likely the right decision for the song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: While I've had the opportunity to work across a range of genres, I typically find myself working on pop, alternative, rock, and indie records.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to bridge the technical and emotional aspects of music production. I have a strong understanding of the technicalities involved in creating a polished, professional track, from the initial stages of composition and arrangement, through the intricacies of mixing and mastering. But beyond that, I have a deep sense of how to convey emotion and narrative through music. This comes from my background as a songwriter and performing artist, and it allows me to bring a unique perspective to the production process. I understand that a song is not just about the notes and beats, but about the story it tells and the feelings it evokes. This dual strength allows me to work effectively with artists, not just in producing a technically excellent track, but in ensuring the music truly resonates with its intended audience.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: When I approach a song, I bring a blend of technical expertise, artistic sensibility, and a decade's worth of diverse experiences in the music industry. Technically, I have a broad skillset that spans from production and engineering to performing, and this allows me to understand a song from multiple perspectives. Whether it's creating an engaging arrangement, crafting a tight mix, or adding the subtle finishing touches in mastering, I ensure each element serves the song and enhances its emotional impact. Artistically, I understand the power of a song to tell a story and connect with listeners. I always aim to honor the vision and voice of the artist, while also contributing my own creative input to enrich the final result. Moreover, my experiences as a session musician and topline artist for labels like Armada and Tropical House Records have given me insights into different genres, styles, and creative processes. This versatility allows me to adapt to the artist's needs and help them bring their unique musical vision to life. Ultimately, I aim to bring a sense of authenticity, depth, and attention to detail to every song I work on.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process starts with understanding the vision of the artist. This might involve a discussion or a review of any preliminary ideas they have. The key is to establish a solid understanding of what they're aiming to express through their music. The rest is determined by this.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Apollo Rackmount, Manley Voxbox, WARM LA2A, Neumann TLM 102 & 103, Shure SM7b/58 Fender Telecaster Wee Lowden Acoustic Acoustic upright piano Yamaha HS10s Vocal booth Slate VSX
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Almost too many to name! Lately I have been incredibly inspired by the unique sonic characteristics of producer Beau Nox, and the unapologetic nature of his production choices. I am also inspired by Rick Rubin, not just for his diverse discography, but for his zen approach to production. He's known for creating a comfortable environment for artists, which is something I also prioritize when working with clients. It wouldn't be complete without mentioning my talented friends and collaborators, such as Judy Blank, Richard Walters, Nathan Nicholson, and many more, who continuously push me to grow as a musician and a producer.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for my clients revolves around music production and songwriting. I often help clients transform their raw ideas into polished, professional songs. This process can involve taking phone demos to full productions, creating acoustic songs or full-band arena material, mixing well-recorded material, mastering songs, and writing parts for various tracks. However, my work is not confined to the technical aspects. I also bring an emotional depth to my projects, working closely with the artist to ensure their vision is fully realized and their music connects with their intended audience. In addition to this, I often work as a session musician, performing piano arrangements, and I've recently enjoyed creating toplines for dance labels. Ultimately, my aim is to elevate the music I work on and make it the best it can be.
