Interview with Chris Andrew

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I had this client who had a song idea but didn't know how to get to the next level with it. I refined the melody and chords based off her reference track. She was over the moon about the result. The song would've never existed if she hadn't come up with the idea and the song wouldn't have been finished if I didn't get my hands on it. Super teamwork!!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Albums, EPs and singles.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Luke Matthew. He's one of my best friends and we work together all the time. Would recommend any time!!!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! Analog brings a warmth and something imperfect while digital can make it possible to create and do stuff that's not physically possible.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Do you work in sessions or on your own? A: I do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. On SoundBetter I mostly write on my own since that's what my costumers like.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be sure that the provider can bring something different to the table. If you wanna break as an artist it's not about sound good / in-the-box; it's about sounding different from the rest.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing music for almost 20 years now. Been in a lot of different bands but it all concluded in my participation for Danish Eurovision in 2021. From that day I've been mainly writing songs for other artists.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ryan Tedder because I love his craft, ambitions and professionalism.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A catchy melody and well-thought lyrics.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Minimal setup to focus on the craft of the song and not get distracted by things you don't need. Instruments like guitars, grand piano, bass, high-string acoustic guitar, percussion, melodica and other quirky instruments to be inspired by.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Ryan Tedder, Charlie Puth, Jeremy Zucker.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Songwriting and collaboration on the artist project. Helping the artist find their unique way of doing art.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I can't rest before my clients are happy.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: To create what my client dreams of with a small little twist that takes the song to a higher level.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That I help other creative souls with their visions and that we make something unique together the world hasn't seen or heard before!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I'm not willing to hop on a call with a client. I love interacting and socializing with who I collaborate with, and I think it makes a much better result! So don't worry, let's have a chat!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I typically dive into the artist you're creating and asking questions about your vision. The more information you provide me the better I can be an extension of your creativity.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic guitar, a pick, a grand piano, a notebook and a pen.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is an international sound with Scandinavian simplicity :)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Better to sound different than in-the-box. Create sounds that hasn't been heard before and combine that with something familiar.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Indie Pop, Acoustic, Pop/rock, Rock, EDM.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When writing a song from scratch I will typically start off on the acoustic guitar, finding the melody until I'm 95% satisfied. Then I dive into lyrics and get the melody, vibe and lyrics to match each other 100% Then I continue with the production.
