Interview with Brian Groot

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The latest few singles from The Awkward. It's a band that I'm very involved in and I think it quite accurately represents my sound and vision.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: One of my biggest projects at the moment is a bunch of singles for The Awkward that I will help write, produce and mix.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet. There seems to be plenty of talent on the platform so do your research and find the person who you think is best at taking your project to the next level.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Honestly, I would go for digital. Although analoge undoubtedly has its very own character and makes something sound so unique, I think digital has come a long way and closed to gap almost fully. Plus, with my current lifestyle I cannot bring many pieces of analog gear so digital is the way to go for me at the moment.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I'll give them the best possible product that we are both proud of.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being able to help clients in reaching their goals using my creativity and expertise.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That you need expensive gear. I always like to give Finneas as an example. He produced Ocean Eyes by Billie Eilish with only Logic stock plugins and a $100 mic.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I always ask what music they love and what they were listening to when they wrote the track. It's a good reference point for what sort of production/mix they want.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Find someone who suits your sound and what you're aiming to get out of it.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Neumann U87, Neve 1073, UA 1176 compressor, Yamaha HS8, guitar

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started off in 2016 when I first started producing for my own band. Later I started to mix our songs and take on other clients as well.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I like to go for big and bold. Beefy drum sound, phat bass and vocals nice on top of the track, accompanied by melodies from synths / guitars / percussion.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Anyone who makes great music.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: If it's good, it should stay. Sounds very basic but in many cases a specific part of a demo might sound amazing but when it comes down to the actual recording you can never get to nail the sound or feel again. If parts of the demo are great, don't redo them but use them.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I mainly work in Indie and Pop music. Secondly, I have experience in Rock, Singer-songwriter, and Ska.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Make a song sound big and great in terms of production and mixing.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Originality. It's easy to copy someone else's songs or mix but in my opinion the beauty is in learning what makes other songs good and use that in my own work.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I think it's always good to start with the bones of the song. For me that is arrangement and lyrics. From there on I build the song track by track adding interesting layers at every step.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I am currently traveling and have a minimal setup with me. I use a MacBook Pro, a UAD interface, my favorite plugins and my trusty Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: There's so many. I really like the production style of The 1975 and Jack Antonoff. I like the mix of vintage and modern in music.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I mainly produce and mix for the majority of my clients. In some occasions I only record a specific instrument or just mix the song.
