Mastering is much more than compression and I try to capture that in all of my work. It's the final touches that adds polish to take your song to the next level, ready for distribution to streaming services and to physical formats.
I am Matthew, I am currently in my final year of study in a level 6 undergraduate BA(Hons) in Music Performance and Production, where I have gained a strong foundation in mixing and mastering. I strongly believe in serving the song so treat each track I receive with the respect and time it deserves. Mastering is more than just compression and when done correctly can help crystalize and solidify a piece into a finished song.

Interview with Matthew Orrell
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working with my band Turning Jade as a drummer and a mastering engineer.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A lot of people do not know how important mastering is as a final set in the machine of making in song. It is quite frequently seen as just another step in mixing a song but it is so fundamentally different. Mastering involves taking a look into the song as a whole, after everything has been pieced together, and making the small, subtle and yet essential adjustments to push it in the right direction.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you're looking for. If you have an idea of a sound you want, make sure to convey that.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would only need two, my Macbook and my Sennheiser HD600s
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Serve the song, only do what needs to be done.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work with Rock music, though I have experience working with many different genres too such as metal and ambient.
