Hi! I'm Charmae. I've been writing and recording vocals for many years and absolutely love what I do! I strive to be communicative and efficient when collaborating with producers and appreciate the trust that is given to me as a vocalist on your projects. I enjoy the creative process and always work to ensure that everyone is happy with the end result. As a DJ myself, I typically am able to gain a clear understanding of what style of vocals/songwriting fits well for multiple styles and sub genres of electronic music. I am also experienced in Pop, Jazz and R&B.
I record from my treated home studio in Ableton. I use a Blue Baby Bottle SL with a Presonus pre-amp. I deliver a lightly mixed demo and always include organized dry vocal stems in 24 bit, 48k WAV files.
Prices vary per project and start at $250 for an original 32 bar original topline.

Charmae is an incredible vocalist and, having worked with her before, this project was just as amazing as the previous one. If you're looking for a vocalist who's as talented as "mainstream" EDM singers, if not more than, I highly highly recommend Charmae. There's not enough good things I could put in this review to do it justice, and if I could give more than 5 stars I would.

I recently worked with Charmae to write lyrics for my new project, and I couldn't be more thrilled with the results. She is an exceptionally talented songwriter who truly understands how to capture the essence of a song and bring it to life through incredibly engaging lyrics. I would highly recommend Charmae to anyone looking for a talented and dedicated songwriter. She is a true professional, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her, and can't wait for the next steps!
Charmae is an absolutely incredible vocalist and I cannot recommend her enough! Having worked with countless vocalists in the past few years, I can honestly say the quality of her work is by far the best I've heard/found, and look forward to working with her on upcoming projects. Her voice is amazing and I genuinely think she is on the same level as, if not better than, plenty of very well known EDM vocalists who work with the biggest artists in the world.
Interview with Charmae
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a vocalist and recording artist with a background in jazz, I draw inspiration a diverse range of musicians and music production professionals. I find inspiration in the powerful vocal prowess of drum and bass vocalists like Becky Hill, as well the smooth, jazzy tone of Billie Eilish, though I continually strive to evolve my own sound and contribute to the vibrant community of electronic dance music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My primary focus is to create compelling songs over their instrumentals (or provide vocals for them to build a track around). I specialize in providing top-quality vocal performances and writing captivating lyrics that align with the producer's vision. This involves understanding the producer's style and genre preferences, maintaining effective communication throughout the creative process and delivering a finished product that exceeds expectations. By combining my vocal abilities with strong songwriting skills, I consistently strive to enhance and elevate the musical projects of my clients.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am very proud of a recent venture I took on called The Producer's Corner, a production workshop at Subtronic's music festival in Florida. I was able to share my expertise on recording and songwriting with an audience, and even wrote/recorded a song live on the spot.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Personally, I am currently working on a vocal sample pack and a solo EP. I am also working on my DJ set for the main stage at Electric Zoo NYC this year, as well as doing a lot of vocal collaborations from my studio every day.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: An awesome producer known as The Abound actually suggested that I should be working on this platform after hiring me initially on another site. I am beyond excited to connect with the SoundBetter community!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! I am a jazz lover at heart, and am from Seattle, so I love a raw vocal, live instruments and distorted guitar. I also love the freedom and ability to create anything within a DAW.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients as a vocalist is to deliver a professional, collaborative and exceptional experience during our time working together. I will deliver high quality work and genuinely care about every single project I take on.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most about my job as a vocalist is the opportunity to bring music to life and connect with audiences/artists around the world. The ability to create and share music that evokes emotion and resonates with listeners is incredibly fulfilling.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common inquiries I receive are about my collaborative process and if I am able to write a custom song about a specific topic. My collaboration process involves close communication and I can always write a song about any given topic.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconception about being an EDM vocalist is that my role is solely limited to providing vocals for producer's instrumentals. I put my heart into each track and often my vocal work plays a role in the overall arrangement, composition and memorability of tracks that may otherwise not have as much replay ability, as strong lyrics and vocals provide the listener something to grab onto. Additionally, my role extends beyond the studio. I am actively involved in live performances, connecting with audiences, and delivering engaging experiences. I invest time and effort in building my brand, connecting with fans, and nurturing relationships within the industry.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When engaging with clients I like to know their overall vision for their project, the timeline, preferred method of communication, budget/compensation and if there are any tracks they'd like me to draw inspiration from.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When considering hiring me as a vocalist, I would suggest communicating as clearly as possible about what you want- even if it's that you want me to take full creative control on vocals/lyrical side of the production. Professionalism and reliability are essential to the success of collaboration as well.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I was stranded on a desert island I would take my laptop, interface, microphone, mic stand, and pre-amp.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been passionately involved in the EDM community for the past 6 years. As a DJ and producer myself, I initially gained recognition in the vibrant underground scene in NYC, opening for artists like Svdden Death, Modestep, Stylust, Liquid Stranger and more, always singing live in my sets. This led to many artists inquiring about my vocal work which how now become my primary focus. Prior to my EDM venture, I had the privilege of being a jazz vocalist in an original hip-hop fusion band, touring with hip-hop legends like Rakim, Jurrasic 5 and Digable planets.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style can be described as a unique fusion of captivating melodies and powerful vocals. I strive to create music that resonates with listeners on an emotional and sometimes even spiritual level.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If given the opportunity, one producer I would be thrilled to work with is Wilkinson. Wilkinson has consistently showcased his exceptional talent and proficiency in the drum and bass genre, establishing himself as a leading figure in the electronic music industry. One of the reasons I am drawn to Wilkinson as a producer is his ability to seamlessly blend melodic elements with high-energy beats, creating an infectious and uplifting sound. His tracks often feature captivating vocal hooks and intricate production techniques that elevate the overall listening experience. Wilkinson's attention to detail in his production is commendable. His tracks are meticulously crafted, with a clear emphasis on sonic quality, tight arrangements, and impactful drops. Collaborating with him would not only provide an opportunity to learn from his production expertise but also to explore new creative avenues within the EDM genre. Furthermore, Wilkinson's collaborative nature is noteworthy. He has previously worked with a diverse range of artists, showcasing his versatility and adaptability in collaborating with vocalists and musicians. This collaborative mindset aligns well with my own approach to music, as I value the exchange of ideas and the opportunity to bring different perspectives to the creative process.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One valuable music production tip I'd like to share is that when working with a vocalist, it's very important to create space for a vocalist to sing over. Even if that requires taking out some of the elements of the track so that the singer can flow over some chords, rather than competing with distracting sounds while recording.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: As an artist, I am best known for my vocal collaborations on dubstep tracks, but behind the scenes I've written hundreds of songs in multiple genre's, ranging from trance to drum and bass to hardstyle and much more.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill lies in the tone and range of my vocal work, paired with an understanding of multiple genre's, arrangement and lyric writing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: When it comes to my contributions to a song as a vocalist, I bring a unique set of skills and qualities that elevate the overall composition. I deliver captivating performances using a wide vocal range and creative lyrics. I bring emotion, power and expressiveness to every line and melody. My goal is to deliver a vocal performance and lyrics that resonate with listeners and enhances the impact of the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process as an EDM recording artist and vocalist revolves around collaboration with producers to write songs over their instrumentals. Here is an overview of my professional workflow: 1. Initial Communication: I establish clear and open communication channels with the producer to understand their vision, goals, and musical preferences for the project. 2. Idea Generation: I actively engage in brainstorming sessions to generate song ideas, melodies, and lyrical concepts that align with the producer's vision. This stage involves exploring different creative directions and experimenting with various musical elements. 3. Writing and Vocal Recording: Once the core ideas are solidified, I begin crafting the lyrics and melodies. I focus on creating impactful and memorable hooks, verses, and pre-choruses that complement the instrumental track. I record my vocals using high-quality equipment, ensuring a polished and professional sound. 4. Demo Feedback and Revisions: I share a demo version of the song with the producer for feedback and input. This collaborative process allows us to refine and enhance the song structure, arrangement, and overall production. I am receptive to constructive criticism and actively incorporate revisions to meet the producer's expectations. 5. Final Production and Delivery: After incorporating the necessary revisions, I finalize the vocal recordings and work closely with the producer to ensure seamless integration with the instrumental track. I deliver the finished vocals in the desired format and assist with any additional post-production requirements. Throughout this process, effective communication, mutual respect, and a shared passion for creating compelling music are vital. By adhering to these principles and maintaining a professional approach, I strive to deliver exceptional results that exceed the expectations of both the producer and the audience.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In my music production set-up, I utilize a range of professional-grade gear to ensure high quality recordings. For capturing vocals, I rely on the Baby Bottle SL microphone, known for it's exceptional clarity and versatility. To enhance the signal chain, I incorporate a Presonus vocal pre-amp, which adds warmth and depth to my vocal recordings. For seamless connectivity and reliable audio performances I use a Focusrite 18i20 interface. As for my DAW, I work in Ableton.
