I've worked with Ren on multiple tracks, and every time he brings a calm confidence and really solid ideas! He makes the process super enjoyable and on top of that is an amazing producer. It was an honour to lay some vocals down on 'London Vibe'.

It’s been amazing to watch Ren grow over time, he’s one of the hardest working students I’ve come across. His dedication to both his production and the business side really shows. Winning the Billen Ted Scholarship was a huge achievement and totally deserved.

Excited to see where Ren goes next

Ren Trey is a great person to work with! He has a lot of creative ideas and is versed in multiple genres. His understanding of music production is fantastic. From genre specific sound design, to creating engaging arrangements with pop sensibility; he has it covered. His nature is friendly and easy going, which makes those (potentially long) studio sessions enjoyable. I’ve consistently seen his dedication to the craft, the long hours, the deep interest, the persistence. A lot of artists and music producers say they want to make it, but don’t actually put in the hours or effort. Ren does.

A while back, Ren asked me to feature on a track called London Vibe, produced by himself. He reached out with a clear vision for the song. After hearing the instrumental and chatting through ideas, I was instantly inspired. I never shy away from trying something new and thanks to Ren I was able to try a new style.
Working with Ren was a really positive experience. The sessions felt organic and focused, and he knows how to draw the best out of his collaborators.

Interview with Ren Trey

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: My advice would be: choose a provider who takes the time to really understand your vision. This is your track, your baby, so communication is everything. Be open with your references, your goals, and even the smallest details, because that helps me (or any producer) bring your idea to life exactly how you imagine it. Also, look for someone who can balance creativity with professionalism. I can bring my own unique sound if you want, or stay fully in the background and make sure the track feels 100% yours. Either way, I always deliver a polished, release-ready result that works across club systems, streaming platforms, and radio. And if you vibe with me, I have excellent testimonials available on my website from clients I’ve worked with outside SoundBetter over the past few years, proof that I’ll give your music the same care and quality.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I started out as a DJ, running a breakbeat radio show that hosted guestmixes from international acts like Dada Life and DJ Zinc. I went on to win multiple DJ competitions, including Mixmag’s Future Heroes, which earned me a booking at Creamfields and performed at major venues and festivals alongside artists such as Chris Lake and Stanton Warriors. Later I built my own label platform and continued developing as a producer. I earned a degree in Music Business & Production from the Academy of Contemporary Music in the UK, where I was also awarded the Billen Ted mentorship/scholarship at Metropolis Studios. After more than 12 years of producing and performing, I now focus on helping other artists finish and release professional, club-ready tracks.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I’ve just graduated from the Academy of Contemporary Music, where I spent the past few years creating tracks across different styles and collaborations. Right now I’m focused on refining that catalogue and shaping it into my new Ren Trey sound, rooted in the UK underground club scene but with a hint of commercial vibes. It’s about taking everything I’ve learned and putting it into a fresh, consistent style that’s built for the dancefloor.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. For me it’s all about flexibility, being able to easily adjust and refine a project at any stage. Even some of the biggest engineers in the world now work fully in-the-box, while a lot of analog gear sits gathering dust. Digital tools give me speed, recall, and freedom to deliver exactly what the client needs without compromise.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love being creative, making something out of nothing. I can wake up with a blank slate and go to bed with a finished track, and it feels like my baby. I’d be doing this even if nobody paid me, in fact, I did for over a decade as a hobby. Music has always been my passion, and I only later realised I needed to start monetising this ‘hobby of mine.’ That love for creating is what keeps me pushing through late nights, challenges, and deadlines. Now I get to channel that same passion into helping other artists bring their ideas to life.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: My style is a mixed bag of all the music I’ve loved over the years. I first fell in love with the club sound around 2008, the electro house era, UK bass, Dutch house, breakbeat, and dubstep all shaped how I produce today. At the same time, I’ve always had a soft spot for commercial dance vibes, so my productions naturally carry a polished, accessible edge. That balance between underground energy and commercial appeal makes my music versatile and sales-worthy to a wide audience.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I have a long list of artists I’d love to collaborate with, and I’m already getting closer to crossing some of those names off. At the top of my list are Chris Lake and Chris Lorenzo, their ability to combine underground energy with mainstream appeal is exactly what inspires me. Working with them would be a dream because their sound aligns perfectly with the type of creative, club-ready music I love to make.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: One mindset trick I use all the time: I approach every project as if I’m remixing it. Whether it’s an original idea or a client project, I treat it like a rethinking, flipping, and reshaping parts instead of getting stuck trying to perfect them. This keeps the project moving forward, helps avoid creative block, and often leads to new, unexpected ideas. It’s a simple shift, but it can be extremely powerful for keeping momentum and improving the track.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I usually work on anything within the dance music range of 110–140 BPM. My main focus is house and its sub-genres, as well as breaks and UK garage. I’ve also worked with drum & bass and slower pop projects, always leaving clients happy. One thing that’s consistent is that my productions are electronic and modern-sounding, whether it’s a club-ready banger or a crossover track.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: I’m a bit of a jack of all trades, decent at everything from production to mixing and arrangement, which means I can take a project from rough idea to release ready product. If there’s ever something super specific outside my lane, I don’t guess, I reach out to trusted musician friends and specialists I’ve worked with for years. We often barter and collaborate, so I always have the right expertise available on call. My real strength is adaptability and problem solving, I make sure your track gets done.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I can always bring my own sound to a track, it’s natural, and people often describe my music as original and cool, with creative choices that stand out from standard trends. Why? Because I draw from a wide range of influences, I tend to make choices based on what feels exciting rather than following sub-genre rules. At the same time, I’m very flexible and can follow your brief closely, avoiding my own touch if that’s what you need. What I bring to every project is creativity, detail, and a professional finish, whether that means unique sound design, tight arrangements, or a mix polish that makes the song truly release ready. I collaborate closely with clients throughout, so you’ll always feel the track is yours, with as much or as little of my own flavour as you want.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: My typical work process always starts with the client’s brief, understanding your vision, needs, and goals. I know how personal a track is, so that comes first. From there, I can build around anything: a vocal idea, a drum loop, a melody, or even just a lyrical spark. If creativity ever hits a wall, I’ve got a toolbox of techniques and references I use to unlock new ideas. I follow a structured workflow that balances speed with quality, building ideas, arranging, refining, and then polishing through mixing. Clients are involved throughout, with revisions to make sure the track feels right to you. The end result is always a professional, release ready record that works whether you’re aiming for club energy, streaming platforms, or radio play.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: My studio setup is simple but professional. I run Ableton Live 12 (11 also available) on a MacBook M1 Pro, with an Ableton Push 2 for hands on control. For hardware I use a Novation Peak and a Novation Launchkey 49SL MK3 keyboard controller, with everything running through a UAD Apollo Twin X soundcard for high level conversion and access to UAD’s industry-standard plugins. I also use an SE 2200 microphone for recording vocals. While I love hardware, these days I mostly prefer working in the box, which lets me deliver projects quickly and keep sessions flexible for later tweaks. Note: I also have access to pretty much every pro plugin available, so I can shape tracks to the highest standard.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: My inspirations range from electronic pioneers like Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, and Fatboy Slim, to modern tastemakers such as Chris Lorenzo, Chris Lake, and Disclosure. I grew up inspired by UK underground legends like Stanton Warriors and Switch, and I also draw from crossover artists like Diplo, Fred Again.., and Skrillex who consistently push boundaries between genres.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I help producers and artists finish what they started, whether that’s turning an unfinished loop into a release ready track, polishing a mix, or adding the extra layers that make a song hit in the club. Sometimes the opposite is needed: stripping sounds back, tightening the arrangement, and making the project punch harder with less. I can also work to a brief as requested. Get in touch and let’s see how I can help you.
