Cynthea Kelley on SoundBetter

Jazz | Americana | Pop mixing; I specialize in music using acoustic-based instruments, preserving natural phrasing and highlighting emotional depth within a mix.

With 8 years of experience, I worked on staff as an engineer and producer at La Luna Recording & Sound (MI) and at Wheelwright Recording Studio (SC). Now based in Nashville, for the past 2 years I've worked as a freelance mix engineer from my home studio and a studio assistant at a variety of studios, including Wildwood Studio, Wheelhouse Studio and Welcome to 1979. I also work for Epic Games, editing popular songs for implementation in the new Jam Stage video game mode in Fortnite: Chapter 5.

Having a musically diverse background has shaped my intuitive approach to mixing—during my time as a music performance major at Coastal Carolina University, I took advanced mixing and mastering courses and produced/mixed an eclectic variety of projects for the CCU recording studio. Also educated in jazz voice and arranging, I have a strong ear for tuning vocals, strings, horns (etc.) and for finding balances and tones that serve and elevate the arrangement of the song.

Many of the artists I've worked with have expressed appreciation for the instinctive musicality that guides my editing and mixing. This has also been a valuable tool in communicating with artists to understand and achieve their creative vision. Feel free to reach out about your next project - I'd love to connect with you.

I hired Cynthea Kelley to mix my 2023 studio jazz album The Holy City Sessions. I believe her work is excellent and am thrilled with the final product. She is easy to work with, quick, and contributes her artistic vision as well as is open to feedback. After the completion of the project, I have recommended her to others looking for a mixing engineer.

I hired Cynthea Kelley as the mix engineer for a very involved live jazz album, on the recommendation of the studio owner. Said he'd met a true unicorn of a mix engineer recently. He was dead on.

Cynthea has a genuine gift for the subtleties of mixing. She made every instrument on my album sound *incredible*: rich, full-bodied, and never competing with each other.

She also brought a vast musical knowledge and perspective to the whole post-production process. Cynthea's a superb guitarist and vocalist, and I'd bet that adds to her sensibility in getting the mix perfect.

    Must hire!

I have hired Cynthea to mix my studio releases, and have been on sessions with Cynthea as an engineer. She is a true professional, and works with me as an artist to create the exact mixes that I want. She is attentive to detail, easy to work with, and quick to catch on to reference mixes. She also has a keen ear for pitch and time, making her a great sounding board for production choices, or choosing the right take. When sending her my sessions for mixes, she had a very quick turnaround and response time. I highly recommend working with her!

Cynthea Kelley is a highly skilled studio engineer, producer, singer, and guitarist. She engineered and mixed several tracks on my album “Timeline Trilogy Volume 2” released in 2022. She also helped to arrange and add her own backing vocals. Cynthea is an excellent listener and worked tirelessly on mixing and vocal editing to get the sound and blend I was looking for. Cynthea combines a multitude of engineering and musical skills with a very strong work ethic. I would enthusiastically recommend Cynthea for any studio engineering job. They would be fortunate to have her.

Interview with Cynthea Kelley

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: The devil is in the details - and I love getting into the nitty-gritty of it all. When it comes to lead vocals and instrumental solos, making sure that the subtleties of each phrase come across is one of my favorite things to do. (It's so satisfying when it hits just right!) Finding appropriate tones and effects to suit the style of the song can be a really fun process as well. The blend of left- and right-brain activities involved in mixing keep me in hyper-focus mode—that, plus a cup of coffee and a square of dark chocolate, and I'm in my happy place.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: Who are your influences? What is the primary focus of your song/album (i.e. a specific instrument, lyrics, overall sound/energy, etc)? What songs or elements of a song would you like to use as a mix reference?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Be sure to choose a mix engineer who can understand your musical vision and your creative language. Communication can be one of the biggest aids or setbacks in the mixing process, so finding someone who sees where you're coming from and what you're trying to achieve can make all the difference.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I've always considered my ear to be my strongest asset. My dad is a mix engineer, and I can remember riding along with him during the "car tests" for his mixes when I was a child. "The bass needs more of a boost at 4k for more clarity," he would say, or, "The vocals still need to come up by about 2 dB on track 3." I started to notice those details, too, and loved the process of learning how to make those changes in my own productions. I began singing harmony at 4 years old, transcribed Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique at 13 and Steve Howe's solo guitar pieces at 14, and started my journey of music production/mixing at 15. Further development was gained during my time as a music performance major, as I took private studies in mixing/mastering and jazz arranging, in addition to advanced classes in 20th-century music theory and aural skills. Growing up with significant exposure to all kinds of music throughout my childhood and beyond has given me a strong intuition to hear which elements should be highlighted in an arrangement and how to make those moments really shine.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Some of my favorite mixes are on Wynton Marsalis' 'Black Codes (From the Underground)' (mixed by Tim Geelan), John Mayer's 'The Search For Everything' (Manny Marroquin), and Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' (Bruce Swedien). As an artist, my biggest inspirations are Esperanza Spalding, Becca Stevens and Joni Mitchell. I've found that the influence from their production and artistry can also find its way into my mixes if it's stylistically appropriate and suits the song I'm working on.

  • Mix Feature: "Morning Buns"Jan 27, 2024

The Holy City Sessions, featuring Randy Napoleon, Brett Belanger and Quentin Baxter, is the second album I've had the pleasure to mix for Tim Fischer. His lyrical improvisation has been an inspiration for me to listen to for years now.
