Interview with THALA

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I have written on many of these and can't wait to work more in that field :)) I am better in person, let's hop on a call or zoom or meet for coffee and you tell me all about what you need.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Atm I am writing my 3rd studio album :)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't know anyone unfortunately.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both :) depends on what people prefer and want. There is beauty in both.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: If you tell me what you want - I will deliver.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love everything about it :) can't say. It is the most challenging but rewarding thing I have ever done.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They ask me for my typical studio rate - I answer - it depends on your budget and on the type of work you want done.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People think cause I am first and foremost a singer, that thats all I do. Maybe it's cause I'm a woman - I don't know. I refuse to believe that. I do so much more though. I have written and co produced my own two albums and without me they wouldn't exist.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are you looking for? :)

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just try to see as much of the artist or musician you wanna hire beforhand - what kind of music do they do? what type of ball park are they in? would they be a good fit for your project - even though - a lot of us are very versatile. but yeah, just ask them questions, maybe jump on a zoom call or meet em for coffee to determine if they fit your vibe :)

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Guitar, Electric Guitar, Amp (run by batteries cause smart), batteries, extra strings

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I would like to talk about this in person as it's a longer story to tell but just know that I am good at what I do - even though - fair enough it took me a minute to actually own up to that fact. I guess it's the same for all of us.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I'd say I am very 90's shoegaze inspired, thinking of the usual melodies I come up with, I love a clear structure if we are talking more of a pop type of song, but my favorite thing is to combine these components and create smth new. If we manage to create a little world around a song - then we made it.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Ohhhh so many! Up there is Boygenius. They are just the most amazing songwriters to exist in my opinion.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: I can definitely say that forcing anything is never a good option, if it flows - it flows and if it doesn't - it doesn't and that is fine. sometimes it is very important to let go of time in that sense and step back to then return even stronger and more focused.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I have worked on my own music mostly, which could be described as Indie Pop Rock - I guess. I have had EDM sessions with multiple artists apart from that, as well as written songs for other artists.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: finding melodies, writing melodies and lyrics, creating song structures

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring that certain something you might be missing so far :) am very keen to outsource sounds until we find what we feel great about.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I love to meet the person behind the project, talk about what moves you and me, why we do what we do, show each other our music and the work we've done to get a better understanding of how we work as individuals, the musicians and bands that inspire us and then usually I just pick up a guitar and come up with a melody - if not a guitar then hand me a beat or some sort of instrumental melody you might already have prepared :) I do love writing from scratch as well though

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: So I do mainly work as a songwriter, composer and session musician in that sense, pair me up with a good engineer and I'm ready to go. I do not have access to a own studio atm.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I love and look up to anything in the ball park of Phoebe Bridgers, Boygenius, Beabadoobee, Soccer Mommy, 1975, Clairo, and many others ( too many to name here) Also a big fan of anything shoegazey.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I have done loads of writing, vocals recordings for other projects and co-producing in different types of studio sessions either for myself or other artists
