Grant Tomlinson

Country and Rock Mix Engineer

Grant Tomlinson on SoundBetter

Producer and mix engineer for David Pugh (check him out on all platforms). I'm a student at Texas A&M who has real passion for mixing music. Looking for work outside of College Station to keep expanding my horizons. I'm constantly improving.

I am a 21 year old producer, guitarist, and recording/mixing engineer based in College Station, Texas. I have worked with bands doing all manner of things, from recording and mixing entire projects to everything in between. I have what it takes to take your song to that next level, industry standard sound that has come to be expected with serious artists, and at a price that really can't be beat for the quality of product that you'll be getting.

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Grant Tomlinson

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: Being that I'm in college, my studio setup is pretty basic. I'm running Pro Tools Studio 22 (but prefer Ableton for programming MIDI) on my 2018 MacBook Pro. On the floor, I have my pedalboard that I run into a Line 6 HX Stomp, into a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4. I have a FMR Audio Really Nice Compressor running as a hardware insert that I use on my drum buss. I also have a pair of Kali LP-6 monitors and a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Analog. To me, it's just way more musical. Even though digital is much more accessible, I prefer the sound and feel of analog gear.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Work with someone you actually enjoy being around.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: My Gibson ES-345, my Zager acoustic guitar, an SM57, an SSL channel strip, and Melodyne.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: As a college student, I'm just getting started, so I've only been at it for a couple years now, but I really think I have what it takes to make a career out of production and mixing.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: My personal style is kind of a mix of country music and 2000s rock. I love making country music, but LOVE listening to grunge and early to mid 2000s rock.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Dave Grohl. He doesn't take himself too seriously and he looks like he truly loves what he does. It never seems like a job to him, it always looks like he's having the time of his life.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: If it sounds good, it is good.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I typically work on rock and country music, and if the song I'm working on is a fusion between those two, that's what I really enjoy.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Mixing guitars

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: Fresh ears. But I pay special attention to the guitars and the drums.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: My favorite band of all time is Foo Fighters. I especially love any project where Dave Grohl and Butch Vig have worked together (Nevermind & Wasting Light especially).

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: The most common type of work I do for a client is production work, specifically with arranging entire songs. I specialize in playing guitar, but I've also recorded bass, keys, and can program drums.
