Interview with Alex Reeves Drums

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Know what you want - describe the way you’d like the music to sound.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: If I were somehow to find myself needing to record drums on a desert island (!!), I’d take my old Ludwig kit, a pair of Coles mics, a Fet 47, strip of Neves and UA Apollo. Seems quite unlikely though, id hope to just continue recording from my studio.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I’ve had my own studio for 20 years. Just been adding to it over the years.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Lovely big phat grooves, playing for the song always.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I’ve worked with many of my dream artists. But I would love to have worked for Bowie.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Yes - record everything!

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Anything that needs rhythm! I’ve worked on major albums, one-off songwriter tracks, hundreds of adverts, film scores, library tracks - everything. Check out my website for a fuller list.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Groove, sound, vibes!!!

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: Groove, sound, vibes!

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I establish what it is that the client needs, sounds, feels etc, then play! I’ll give you a couple of different takes, more if you need, and a stereo drum mix, plus all the stems. Everything you’d expect from a major studio.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I have a beautiful and great-sounding studio near central London, I work there most of my time and know the sounds inside and out (I have a glorious long resonant corridor I use as a reverb chamber!). I can record up to 24 mics - and I often do, adding effects mics to a traditional drum kit mic’ing set up. My go tos are my Coles 4038s for overheads, plus a U67 - just like all the major London studios do, for that English sound. I’m a nerd too - you know you’re gonna get all the things you need from your drum recording.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Any great music!!

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Any and all types of drum recordings - people come to me for the song, and also for unusual ideas and sounds.

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
