Interview with Jon Marine

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: JETWAY is my most recent work, an 8 song EP.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital because of ease of use.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: I believe being a primarily trap-based producer brings a negative stigma about what a producer is capable of just because of the saturation of producers in that field, with a lot of imo bad songs/mixes along the way. I am capable of making outstanding songs...primarily in trap, but don't let the word "trap" fool you about what the song will sound like.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: I would tell the customer to expect a high quality result within a short time frame, and just send me stems/tracks that don't have a lot of clipping issues.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started making music in 2020, a couple of years after discovering vintage ICYTWAT. ICYTWAT's music made me realize that to make fantastic sounds you don't have to know every detail about music theory, and when that clicked it made songwriting feasible for me.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Smooth and elegant.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: In trap, safety first. And in that genre there aren't a lot of likeable and safe characters. I'd love to one day work with someone like Navie D, and I always like working with my current entourage. A pipe dream would be learning what I can from Jean Luc Ponty.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Be original and organic. Sample as little as possible so that way your music will be new and fresh.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Ethereal trap, just music that makes you think of an alternate reality.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Minor 9th chords haha. Seriously though, I'm good at gain staging.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I bring a familiar but fresh soundscape to any song. I have disregarded a lot of imo "sub-par" music to find the best influences for myself as a songwriter not necessarily as a trap producer. Trap will always be a part of my resume and I enjoy making it, but I want to be able to evolve.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: It normally takes me 30 minutes to make a full song. I'll start with chord progression most of the time, write a drumline, add melodies, and then the 808/bass. That'll take about 20 min. I can effectively mix/master within 10-15 minutes because I mix while I'm composing. I don't "sample" in regards to dragging mp3 files of full songs into a slicer then making a beat. I do have to work with tiny samples of drum hits and bass that are often misinterpreted as organic sounds, which means every sound from a drum kit is a sample. So I manipulate the drum sounds as well as the bass/808 while composing. That leaves an easier path for me to gain stage at the end of the song composition because I wont be working with samples that are clipping after cleaning that up.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I'm a bedroom producer, I have my pair of Kali LP 6 monitors, AKG K361 headphones, Casio 33-key keyboard, and a lot of software set up for my productions.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I have a lot of influences from jazz fusion. Artists like Jean Luc Ponty, Frank Zappa, and Greg Howe inspire my mixng/mastering and sound selection. Trap artists like ICYTWAT, Thouxanbanfauni, and even my friends/partners that I work with have inspired me to push myself to the limit with song structure, composing, and workflow.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I am my own client most of the time, so that means I'm capable of composing, mixing, and mastering at a high level on instrumentals and vocals. When I have external clients, I normally am mastering a full track or mixing then mastering with stems.
