Endorse Christopher GalenOver the years, I’ve worked with dozens of talented session musicians and recording engineers on my songwriting projects, but none as gifted or musically insightful as Chris Galen. Songs are delicate things. It’s easy to force them into genre clichés or render them characterless by smoothing out the rough edges. Yes, Chris is a gifted singer and guitarist, and a chameleon in his versatility. More importantly, he is uniquely able to intuit what the songwriter is trying to accomplish and then provide exactly what the song needs, emotionally, texturally, and harmonically.
Interview with Christopher Galen
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring over 40 years of experience as a songwriter, guitarist, vocalist and producer. I bring a genuine energy and emotion to all my performances, and strive for the right vibe and feel for your song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When doing vocals, I request a guide track from the client so I can get a feel for the song and make sure it is in my range and fits my style. If all is good, then I request an instrumental track (stereo mix is fine in most cases) along with lyrics. For song production, I have the client send me some sort of rough track so I can start to generate ideas. At the same time I have the client describe in detail what they are envisioning for their song: Style, energy, genre, reference sound-alikes, etc. From there we talk about their budget and what can be accomplished. After that I will mock up some scratch tracks to make sure I am on target with what they are thinking. If approved, move forward with actual tracking and production.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run an in the box project studio in Fort Collins, CO. I use Universal Audio interfaces, along with UA Plugins (primarily). Microphones include UA Sphere modeling mic, Warm Audio WA84, WA 251, plus other Sennheiser and Shure mics. I use Studio One Pro 7 as my DAW, and mix on a combination of Focal Alpha Twin Evo's and the VSX headphone system.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Lindsey Buckingham, Steely Dan, Death Cab For Cutie, Dawes
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Lead vocals, background vocals with arrangement and song production.
