Interview with Yann Lumbala
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on a single for a very talented South African artist who does hip hop and afro pop "Samke", I was producing and mixing.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on an album for a Hip Hop group based in the DR Congo
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: White Sea Studio
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: A bit of both, because they have different textures that I like.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I always promise to work with passion.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like the fact that I can enter people's mind and materialize it.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What gear and DAW do you have? my answer to that: "It's not the gear it's your ears".
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest I encountered is the fact that some artists think "It will sound better after mixing".
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I mostly ask them to tell me more about the song or project, so I can understand where the inspiration comes from and be part of their same universe.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would advise him/her to feel free and express to me all his/her crazy or dumb ideas regarding the project with no fear.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Keyboard, MacBook, Headphones, sustain pedal and a drum machine.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied piano and music production, I've been doing it since 1999.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is very complex but I try to be more expressive and precise.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would prefer working with upcoming artists. Because I have nothing to offer to those who have already found their sound
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always do what's best for the song, no matter what.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Afro Pop & Hip Hop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Patience
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring life, depth and clarity to it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process is very simple, I have a conversation with the artist/client to understand what they need, I listen to the rough mix, reference or any material provided, for at least a day, while taking note on what should be done and the next day I start working on the project.
