Interview with Jay El Dee
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: A family member recently asked me to reimagine an EDM song they liked in order to make it appropriate for a wedding first dance. This was a fun challenge and so rewarding to witness them dancing to it at their wedding. Best wedding gift I ever got to give!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am releasing music under my pop project, in the final stages of a live album for my church, and focusing a lot of energy on my songwriting - filling my song catalogue with new material.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The layman thinks that pitch correction can make a singer of any talent level sound good but the truth is, in order to get a good vocal sound, a singer must have pleasant and interesting vocal tonality, decent pitch, and use proper technique. Using pitch correction to enhance the vocal track of an unskilled singer is like putting lipstick on a pig. It’s, quite obviously, still a pig.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want to get out of your vocal? Are there any problem areas you are particularly concerned about?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Closely consider sample tracks as you vet your vocal editors. Listen for artifacts and “auto-tuned” type sounds to avoid an obviously edited vocal. Aim to sound naturally skilled and not over-processed.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am a songwriter, recording artist, and vocal producer. Additionally, I work as a vocal coach with a select number of artists, helping them care for their instruments and improve their technique.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a pure and powerful vocal style. I add interest and flavor to my tracks without taking over-the-top liberties - nuance without ostentation.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have primarily worked on vocals for pop, country, and contemporary christian/worship music but am open to working on other styles.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal pitch correction & tracking professional vocal lead/harmony/background vocals.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most enjoy pitch correcting and editing pre-recorded vocal tracks for my clients. However, I also provide vocal tracks for my songwriter clients’ demos and harmony background tracks for professional release.
