I call him MJ bc I love to connect his name with some of the greatest legends with those initials bc he’s legendary! I love working with Melza and have worked on many projects with him. He engineered my latest project and many songs I’ve recorded. I don’t trust many engineers and producers, but he is my favorite go to person. I am comfortable creating with him and his feedback is genuine and professional.

I've worked with Melza on a few projects now and love the outcome of my songs! He was considerate of any notes I had and created professional mixes and masters that I am very proud of. Melza brings all his knowledge and experience as a musician, producer, arranger, and engineer to the mixing table. I love that his resume is diverse in all genres, that he is a great collaborator, and that I can depend on him to deliver amazing results. In addition, he arranged and engineered background vocals, which showcases yet another skill set of his. I look forward to working with him on the next song!

Melza is an amazing influential engineer! He has helped me visualize a better mix and construct music differently. We have worked on a couple projects and I am proud of the outcome. In my eyes, Melza is a super star. If you’re looking for an engineer that can mix and master your tracks to perfection, you can count on Melza! Melza also helped me with my voice, including me in projects, and was an amazing mentor. Thank you Melza!

Interview with Melza

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Over Christmas break this year I worked on a 3 song project for Syleena Johnson. Each project is attached to a different Christmas movie as a soundtrack. Was a lot of work but I mixed 26 songs for the projects and they had so many talented Artis such as: Keke Wyatt, Kenny Lattimore, Syleena Johnson, Carl Thomas, Danny Boy and more.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment we are getting ready to produce another Carl Thomas project and also a song for a great WNBA team!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, Jamel Kimbrough. One of thee most talented produces you'll ever meet!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I would rather go analog because digital can never match the sound of the old dinosaur!!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To give you my best work every time!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The outcome of the product and when a customer is overly satisfied with the finished product.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Who have I worked for in the past. And I tell them who I have worked for!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I can make you sound like an A-List artist when you don't have the best package for me to work with. If your session is not clean or recorded correctly I can't make you sound the way you would like...

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Please know what you need before asking someone to engineer your music. Are you prepared and ready to work with the engineer to acquire the sound you are looking for.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to the music and make the decision if that person has the sound you desire! If they do then get to work!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Mac mini, Dre Beats, My Maschine, Mic, and my Apollo...

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been in music since the 1997. I started off doing production in my fathers studio for some of the guys I went to school with.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a chameleon because I can and have worked on so many different styles of music.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Rihanna! I love her style and the feel she brings to the music... (Fun fact: My friend produced her first single)

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Just do what the song calls for no more no less!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on Hip Hop projects but as of the last 5 years pop and EDM has been home. But all in all I mix a variety of music I'm not just stuck in one world.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is mixing in a whole!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring the essence in which the song is suppose to have. When I mix I make sure to do what the song calls for. I try not to over mix a song or put different stuff in the song that does not belong there. I know if I am mixing a country song I cannot put drops that I may put in a rap song. I don't want to take away from the feel that's supposed to be there!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually record, mix and master everything myself for whichever artist I am working with at the time. Lately I've been mostly mixing and mastering where people send me their music from wherever they are in the world and I put my magic on it and send it back!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I use to record for a lot of bands but I downgraded my studio to service more single artist and a comfortable atmosphere for me to just mix and master in. I have a Tascam DM-4800 for my mixer board with 64 tracks. I recently switched from my Apogee Ensemble interface to a Universal Audio Apollo Twin (I love it)! I use a Avantone Condenser Mic and I use ProTools and Logic Pro as my DAW's.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Dr. Dre, Timbo, Calvin Harris, RedOne, DJ Khaled, Guru and more!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: When I started mixing and mastering I did more work for the Hip Hop and R&B community. As time went by I created a love for more of the Pop and Dance world.
