Interview with Aryan Brashier
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My first EP for sure. I didn't really know any of the stuff I did now so the wonders of doing something unknown and not being afraid to try out new things is definitely an exhilarating feeling
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My album, as well as a song for a friend.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because even though you can't physically touch it, you have limitless possibilities in comparison. Analogue is also a slippery and expensive hobby
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to deliver to you the best possible version that suits your needs.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The result, the celebration when it's finally out
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Some people think my job is to just hit record, some people think I'm a DJ, most people don't really understand what mixing or mastering is.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the idea behind the song? What type of sound are you going for? Do you have a reference track or do you want it to sound unique? Do you have any specific requirements or ideas? Are you working under a deadline? Is this for a label or independent?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: A lot of people are going to diminish you, discredit you, count you out, or call you mad for believing you can achieve it. But that belief alone is the most important factor in achieving whatever you want. Don't give up, your idols never did.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop. Beyerdynamic DT770 pros, my external SSD (aka my lifeblood), an infinite power bank (or at least the largest one I can get) a mic
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: It had to be this, I wouldn't have it any other way. I started 5ish years ago, messing around in my bedroom, now I've got a degree and an album coming up.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Definitely more contemporary, when I first started I was more into the old school analogue warmth but then I was welcomed by the world of sound design.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with twenty one pilots. Their drum mixes and instrumentations are quite elite.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Early reflections. Common knowledge to some, game changer to others. Look it up.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, and R&B, sometimes a more old school acoustic/analogue sound, sometimes a more futuristic, bright and auto tuned sound.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Aside from the rapping, producing, and normal mixing stuff, I get pretty creative with my effects and sound design. I'm also really good at vocal tuning so even if you aren't confident with the notes you hit, I can help you get there
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Attention to detail, I take this very seriously and I hyper focus on the little things to make sure everything sounds right.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First things first, clean up the project. Everything has to be colour coded, aligned, named (no shame in getting creative with it) put into the correct tracks/folders, merged or separated depending on what's needed. Next thing, align the vocals (if needed) and finally, gain adjust. Then I start by simply using a Brainworx channel strip on everything to EQ or compress. If I want a distinctive style of compression (on kick bass, vocal, etc) I'll use something like a Fairchild, 1176 LA-2A or SSL G channel. Then I add effects like chorus, distortion, phasers etc, if needed. Once everything is cleaned up and starting to sound cohesive. I start adding depth effects like reverbs, delays filters etc. anything to get it lively and get it all moving, this can be straightforward or experimental, depends on the song and the sound. Next, I do automation, like little delay throws wherever needed, glue compress on the master and add some tape emulation and then i send it off for mastering (or master it myself haha)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have access to really expensive consoles like SSL Origin, SSL Duality and such, I do most of my mixes in the box with a lot of analogue emulations too.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I grew up listening to a lot of Eminem, Nas, 50 Cent, Linkin Park, lots of old school soul but nowadays I listen to a lot of J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Cordae, Bruno Mars, and similar artists
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly work on Hip-Hop and Pop/R&B songs, I also occasionally do rock and metal
