Amy Duncan

Double Bassist

Amy Duncan on SoundBetter

Double bass player working across classical, experimental, folk and theatre music. Classically trained, I bring a sensitive, collaborative approach to every project, with extensive experience in live, studio and collaborative work. I also offer close harmony backing vocals, refined across ten albums of my own recordings.

I started playing the double bass at 14 and two years later was offered an unconditional place at the Royal Northern College of Music. That classical grounding shaped my playing, as did a lifelong love of artists like Danny Thompson, John Martyn and Joni Mitchell - and a parallel fascination with experimental music.

As a singer-songwriter I've released ten albums, playing double bass on every one. My debut was discovered by US label Plain Recordings, and my music has featured on BBC3's Lip Service and the Netflix reboot of Charmed. With Creative Scotland support I worked with producer Calum Malcolm (The Blue Nile) on Cycles of Life (Linn Records), which featured my string arrangements performed by members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Recent albums have received airplay on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Scotland.

As a performer I've worked with singer-songwriters including Carol Laula and Lisa Rigby, and collaborated with harpist and composer Fiona Rutherford. I was also a founding member of folk-punk band Swelling Meg. Theatre credits include the National Theatre of Scotland's June Carter Cash: The Woman, Her Music and Me, and Undertow Overflow - a Creative Scotland funded show that toured Scotland and Romania to 4-star reviews.

Whether you need warm, spacious pizzicato, bowed textures, or close harmony backing vocals, I'd love to be part of your project.
