Alex Pohn on SoundBetter

Producer and Recording Artist Alex Pohn, residing in Vienna (AUSTRIA) is looking forward to showing you his unique sound and approach to your Song. In his favorite playground in the 7th district of Vienna he produces Music and Records and plays the Drums with great passion and attitude.

Here on soundbetter I offer you my personal taste in Drumming and Producing.
I will give your song the right Feel and Mood, this combined with my skills as a Professional Session Drummer and the Sensitivity of a Producer.
I would describe myself as a Groove-Oriented Song Drummer who loves pocket Grooves a la (Dave Gadson or Steve Jordan, etc.), but I also have a weakness for deep Singer/Songwriter Stuff and love Dance and R&B Music.
I´ve experimented for many years with Hybrid Drums which is in my opinion very important for Modern Pop Music, but I also love to discover unique organic sounds.
My background, that I have no trouble in, is playing Rock and Pop Music!
I´ve work in my studio in Vienna for over a decade, it is filled with some very special and extraordinary Gear. I chiefly use Vintage Drums from Ludwig, Gretsch, Slingerland and PAISTE Cymbals in all Sizes with a selection of well selected Microphones, Pre Amps and a lot of Outboard gear. I´m the Producer for International Award winning Artist OSKA, INA REGEN, JULIAN LE PLAY, LEMO and playing Drums for HUBERT VON GOISERN and during my career as a Session Drummer I´v played for many artists.

One of, if not the best and most musical drummer in Austria. Alex has the perfect musical understanding to make songs grow by providing a beautiful rhythmic foundation. He is not only rock solid and always fits and supports the song but is also a skilled recording engineer that knows how to properly tune, record and edit drums in a musical way! Highly recommended!!!

Alex has played his tastefully sounding drums on numerous songs of my own and for several music productions I did since 2010. Apart from his tight drumming which actually never needs any kind beat detective like treatment, his versatility and musicality are his best qualities to mention. No matter if it's a singer-songwriter ballad, a grunge track or pop song - he always delivers drums on an up-to-date international level. He offers a lot of respect and understanding for songwriters, composers and music producers and adds his personal note and taste to a piece of music very empathetically.

Alex has been my drummer of choice for 15 years and we have worked on numerous records since then. His drumming is not only tight and on point, but above all, his musicality and ability to put himself at the service of the song and the music are absolutely outstanding! His drum sound and drum kits are superb! On top of all that, he is a super nice guy! I can't recommend Alex enough!!

Interview with Alex Pohn

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Three years ago I´ve started to develop a new Artist, called OSKA. I produced an EP and an Album (My world, My love, Paris), which was given an award in Austria for Best Sound/Production in the last year. With OSKA I´m also the Drummer and a Musical Director on tours and concerts, i’m incredibly proud that she won the Music Moves Europe Award 2023 at Eurosonic Festival and OSKA also supporting TOM ODELL on his "the monsters tour" 2022.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My Girlfriend and I, we are expecting a little girl in a few weeks;-) The time we have between planning this beautiful change in our lives and creating time in the studio is exciting. That‘s also the main reason why i‘m here on soundbetter. It makes it possible having some time at home during creating and recording some new exciting music.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: That I´ll put all my musicality into your song

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: How many Takes do you send to me??? Normally I would send you one edited DrumTake and you’d get some extra Overdub Takes with Percussion or Hybrid Drum Tracks. If you would like to have more Takes for creating and editing by yourself that’s also ok, but I do prefer to send, one Take.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: Playing too many big Fills over the whole Song or improvising a Drum Solo over a 10 Minutes Track. hahaaa!!!;-)))

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Very often the music speaks for it’s self. But Sometimes it's good to know the preferences of the clients, what sounds/artists they are into.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Give me a chance to bring my sound to you. If you have a track submittal? send it to me and I WILL take your track and bring it to a beautiful sound aesthetic. If you would like me as an artist and want me to bring my own personality to your track ? Then let's have a chat about what you´re into and We will find the perfect mixture.

  36. A: I work on Many different Styles, but POP is of course the most popular Music i work on. Different Styles, but most Pop Music.

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: Endurance and Accuracy

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: I believe that I will bring songs to the right Feel and Mood, that, combined with my skills as a Professional Session Drummer and the Sensitivity of an award wining Producer.

  41. Q: What's your typical work process?

  42. A: It depends, if for example I’ve been Provided with a Song from a client where I've not been given any special instructions. I would play at first, exactly, the drum track that is on the Drum stem. If possible?, I would first mute the Drum Stems so I can listen and creating a picture of what I could do/play or produce for this Song, then I would listen to the Song a few more times for feel and a direction, Then I’d open a Cubase file, create my DrumTracks and Files, go to shuffle mode so I’m able to play three "Get to Know the track” takes on my old pre miked Ludwig Drumset (22",13",16") if it’s not feeling right for the song I would then change some of the equipment, tuning the drums, modifying some pieces here and there. Then I’d record and listen to the new Sound, when I feel comfortable with how it all feels as a piece of music, I'll listen to the Original Drum Layout and get new information on what the Client would like to have. Then I’d change some arrangements and build a mixture between the clients submission combined with my own approach. I have to confess that the first thing I do is write a lead sheet with the form and on the right side I make a note of the tempo.

  43. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  44. A: My Recording Rooms are acoustically well treated and balanced and of course filled with loads of Gear. I´m working on CUBASE with my Mac, using an UAD Apollo16 with a BURL Audio Converter and I also use different and very special PreAmps, (2x NEVE 4081, API 512C, Undertone Audio, AEA).
