Lo-fi and Home Records Mixing

Eric-Marie (Missié) Picard on SoundBetter

We often have this unique home made recording that we want to preserve and to share. But the background noise is too loud, the recording itself is poor quality, the played back music needs to be reinforced... When feelings and live freshness are more important than sound standards, I can help editing, mixing and meeting your expectations.

Whether it be a kids' recording that we want to share with the family, a meditation recorded outdoors that we want to podcast, an interview caught in the street or on a plane, or a live performance that we want to use as a demo; I am addressing all these recordings that are not matching professional standards, but that deserve to be saved.
As part of the service, I am handling voice and instruments tracks editing, clean up and warming, ambient noise reduction and preservation as per need, reinforcement of musical themes, mixing with additional soundtracks such as ambient music and samples. For all of these, the preservation of the natural originality of the record is my top priority.
Each submitted project will go through a fee-free evaluation of what can actually be done. This is to make sure that I can meet your expectations, and also that I have a deep understanding of the emotional context.

Please note that I am not a video professional, I don't have the knowledge nor the tools for advanced video editing. Still, I can definitely prepare the soundtracks to meet the requirements of a video producer.

As for my background, I am a musician, bassist and vocalist, issued from the French Conservatoire, with three independent self-produced albums. Teacher in professional music high-school, I am a live sound engineer mainly involved in projects with high emotional context.

Interview with Eric-Marie (Missié) Picard

  1. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  2. A: Out from this specific offer, I do compose, perform and mix pop, rock and classical music. Apart from my personal musical projects, I usually support youths' creations and theater plays with on stage musicians. Instant expression is what I seek for.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: Emotion

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: Clarifying all the requirements and expectations. Loading the sources into my flow, and making a first draft to validate that I am on the proper path. Checking again with the client and, may be recycling, if I was missing something, or moving backward to a previous release. Overall, capturing the rejects, correcting them, to reach the final expected release.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Working with Presonus Studio One, and when needed, supporting other majors - ProTools, Ableton Live, Cubase, Logic; together with several high rated plugins. All my flow is digital. And the reason for it, is that I can apply on top of the hearing, an artificial intelligence (AI) learning each track, and returning to me the parameters, or let's say the characteristics, that need to be preserved or removed. A chirurgical work with the objective of maintaining the originality.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: Most of the online jobs are related to recording cleaning up, voice enhancement and background noise reduction. Then comes often a mixing of low fidelity soundtracks, to preserve the ambiance while enhancing the overall sound. All the projects are live recordings, home made, non professional, that have an objective to match the major platforms' audio requirements.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Depending on the available electrical power on this island... But I would go for: - an acoustic guitar with pickups and many spare strings - an acoustic bass also with pickups and many spare strings - a dynamic mic - a MacBook Pro with all the software I can take - a warm sound interface (4 combo ins)

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I have been doing such for 20 years

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: My offer is not related to any specific genre or artist. But if we would match a professional segment, that would be a live sound production for which you have no control on the source.
