Interview with Jordon Henry
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long have I been playing. Long time lol
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I did a project where I worked on 5 originals and 1 Christmas cover piece for a client in my hometown. I was the bassist in this project and it turned out to be a major success! Super happy about that.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m helping a buddy of mine create a jazz fusion album.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! Two people! Ray Nesbit & Darrell Nutt! Some of the most amazing and musically knowledgeable people I’ve had to chance to know and work with.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital may be the what’s happening now, but you cant beat the warmth and voicing from the analog.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I’ll try my best to enhance their vision. I’ll always give my 100 best, no matter the song.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to help the clients with what they need.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That you have to be talented to be good. It isn’t necessarily true.. time invested beats talent in my opinion.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Most of the clients I’ve worked with already have bass parts in their song. I usually if they want me to keep the same bassline or add my own to the project.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Try to your best to be specific on what your vision is. If you can accurately convey what you want, the provider can deliver for you. Also, it’s always beneficial to tell the provider the BPM of the song, the bit and sample rate, it just makes everything else streamline and easier for the provider to deliver.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. My bass 2.audio interface lol 3. Some monitors 4. A solar powered power pack for my laptop. 5.a fishing net to capture fish for food 😎
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been playing music since I was about 2 years old starting in the church. I’ve been playing music professionally for about 5-6 years. Been working for an agency in southwest Florida that provides entertainment for weddings, private events, etc. but I’ve been freelancing and doing studio work on the side for just as long.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style to be very warm.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Anita baker! I know and love all of her songs. Those basslines were amazing to me lol
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Lol don’t record too hot! 😂
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Alternative/indie music has been my focus so far, although I've worked on a variety of music genres during my career outside of SoundBetter. ranges from country to hip-hop. I make an effort to maintain my flexibility.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ear! Growing up and playing in a gospel church has developed my ear so much over the years.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to find a pocket in the song rhythmically and harmonically and stay there for the completion of song. Of course I’ll add a little seasoning when it’s needed.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the project first and depending on what the client wants, I’ll either enhance what’s already there or create a line that I hear within the music.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Nothing crazy, but I have focusrite 18i20, Yamaha Hs7’s, MacBook Pro running Logic.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Marcus millers, pino Palladino, Gary Willis, victor wooten to name a few.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: It ranges honestly. I try to be as versatile as possible.
