Interview with Charlie Blue
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Almost Blue's Oleo double album. There is a part of my soul attached to that work since I wrote, arranged and produced 90% of the album. This highlights the mix between Jazz/Rap and latin music and other styles. Go check it on Youtube or Spotify
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm in a bunch of projects. Right now i'm making music for Nanizzie, which is a singer-songwriter from Panama. Constantly working on Sr Pablo's music. Also i'm working on tracks for Maki Vaez who is a great producer from Medellin, he has worked with Daddy Yankee, Eladio Carrion and many more.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Doug V is the man if you want a romantic/sexy vibe song
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I think both serve different purposes. I'll go with analog since the realm it works in is an infinite-continous realm rather than a bit-based digital realm like modern gear. But my ultimate opinion is: if it sounds good it doesn't matter
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Make the most musical work possible
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The people you met and the places you get to visit/enter. Everyone has an incredible story to tell
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My guitar, My bass, My laptop, My interface and a solar panel with outlets to plug everything in hahaha
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing guitar in 2007. Since I was a kid I dreamed of being a star. When I first got in a band i felt some wierd connection with other people and that changed my life forever. I took it seriously and got on college for an Audio Engineer degree focused on music production, mixing and mastering, while studying in college I gained a massive recognition with a rap/jazz band called Almost Blue and made myself a name on the industry. I found myself playing in the most important music festivals in Colombia such as Altavoz Internacional and HipHop al parque. Later on I started to hang with artists of different genres and got to work in the Reggaeton industry. I guess is up to fifteen years of doing this.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Sweet handed. I'm like an old fashioned guitar player from the 70's with the touch of modern music since my work mainly focus on Trap and HipHop
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I think my number one would be David Paich because his compositions made me feel like a child discoverying new things everytime. I can't stop listening to the great songs of the 70's and 80's (to find he is on most of the works)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be true to yourself. Art is a reflection of how you see the world and its matters. It doesn't care if your friends and family tell you aren't good enough because everyone has their own perspective, their own experiences. If this is your mindset, you'll find an infinite source of inspiration everytime you seat in front of your instrument or computer.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I'm mostly working on Raggaeton, Trap and Hip Hop and R&B since Medellin has become a Meca for it. But i have played different styles over my carrer from Jazz to Rock and even latin/folk music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm fast and effective. I can easily write a melody, a chord progression or a whole song in one session. That's why i get called so often here in Medellin.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Soul. The one thing that dragged me into making music, the feelings that top your body but you cannot explain through rational thinking. I've been studying this phenomenon for 8 years or so. Check my work on Youtube, i think listening to the actual music will explain more than this words.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending of which work i'm doing. For recording guitars i often listen to the references and search for the same mood without being a copycat, my focus is to catch feelings not the music itself. This is the same for any instrument I play. If i'm working as an engineer my focus is to enhance the little details that make the work different than others, it could be a particular sound or part but i'm always aiming on the connection made by the music and the listener, that mistycal part hard to describe in words.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have two setups, one for my home studio which consist on a pair of Kali Audio LP6.5, a focusrite 6i6 and my instruments (i own 5 guitars,2 basses and a bunch of latin instruments like tiple). The other one consist of a pair of ATC scm25a, an antelope audio discrete 8 and my instrumentes as well, this is in the pro-studio I share with my business partner and investor.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I think the ones that inspire me the most are Steve Lukather, David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Mac Miller, Rick Rubin and Stuart Zender
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Everything from guitars to production, mixing and master. I've been playing guitar since 2007 but my college degree is on Audio Engineering.
I was the Producer, Multi-instrumentist,Mixing Engineer, Mastering Engineer in this production
