Analog Mixing and Mastering

David Soro on SoundBetter

I offer analog / tape mixing and mastering services at an affordable rate.

Hi! I'm David Soro, a 26 year-old artist and producer who loves music production. I remotely mix and master songs with vintage and boutique analog equipment.

I began mixing and mastering to be able to self-produce my own original material, but quickly found that I enjoyed that process just as much as I enjoyed writing and performing. My style is a reflection of my influences -- I love the big organic sound of classic rock, as well as modern singer-songwriter, indie, folk, and Americana records. My goal in mixing and mastering is to deliver a product that sounds big, timeless, and professional, without over-manipulating the mix.

I rely on analog equipment for all audio processing except reverb and delay effects (I unfortunately don't own any reverb plates/chambers!) Although there are tons of phenomenal plugin options that I use occasionally, I still think it's hard to beat the timeless sound of analog. I do the majority of my audio processing with outboard equipment and a tape machine.

I attended Syracuse University's Newhouse School and graduated with a major in Television, Radio, Film and a minor in Music Industry. While at school, I took classes on music production, mixing, and sound design. My experience in college, as well as my work as an independent artist, have trained my ears to be able to achieve professional quality mixes quickly and efficiently!

Interview with David Soro

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: Analog Preamps : Audioscape Golden 58 ; GAP Pre73 ; WA12 Analog Compressors : Black Lion Bluey 1176 ; UAD LA2A ; GAP Comp3A ; TubeTech CL1B ; Manley Vari Mu Analog EQ's : Pultec EQP-1A Studer A812 Tape Machine UAD Apollo x4 ; UAD Capital Chambers ; UAD Pure Plate Reverb

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Analog! Digital is great for efficiency and tying up loose ends, but analog provides a weight and depth that is hard to replicate.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Talk a lot about your vision for a project! Most of the time, if an engineer doesn't get you something you like, it's because of a lack of proper communication. Take the time to tell your engineer what elements you want to be highlighted in a mix, and what elements you want to be in the background of a mix.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: tape machine, 1176 compressor, LA2A compressor, pultec eqp-1a EQ, and a Manley Vari Mu Compressor. I could confidently make a good mix for any style of music with that gear!

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Old-school. I love music that feels real, I think we need more of it these days.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Proper compression and saturation are the keys to a "big" mix. Get those two things right, and the rest becomes pretty easy!

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Rock, Folk, Singer-Songwriter, Americana, Indie -- anything that has a raw, organic feel to it.
