Nnenna Kele

R&B and Soul Singer-Songwriter

Nnenna Kele on SoundBetter

I am an R&B and Soul songstress with the gift of telling stories through songwriting.

Hey y'all! My name is Nnenna and I am a female soul/R&B singer-songwriter from the Bay Area looking for more professional music opportunities. I have been singing and performing since the age of 4 and songwriting for the last 12 years for myself and other local artists. I have experience with studio and home recording (using primarily Logic Pro X), song covering, vocal arranging, creative writing and most of all: singing! Genres that I have experience in include R&B/Soul, gospel, jazz and pop. I have performed at LinkedIn, Twitter, Yoshi's Jazz Club (San Francisco), San Francisco State University and How Sweet The Sound Gospel Competition (2012).

I am the best for your musical needs as I have great vocal range (alto), tone and vocal dynamic while being able to cater to your specific vocal needs to a project. My songwriting is personable, classic, and honest.

Interview with Nnenna Kele

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: TBD

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Most of the time I am asked what my sound is like to which I tell that that I am influenced by Anita Baker, Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan, and Beyonce

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: A project I worked on that I am proud of is a track I did on my first EP "February Stories" called "Telephone" as it was my first intro into not only songwriting but it is an acappella track I completely arranged vocally. I am still proud of it to this day.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I am currently working on my songwriting craft ultimately to put out another body of work.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: I prefer digital as it is all that I have ever used.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I will go above and beyond to make sure the product is to your satisfaction; quality is above everything.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I love how an idea comes to fruition in a complete project. Being able to look back and see how the simple idea came to life is a wonderful feeling.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is probably that it does not require a lot of work or that it can be easy. Singing comes naturally for me but studio sessions have taught me that a lot of technique is involved. In regards to songwriting I think a misconception is that every song is going to be well written on the first go. In order to write good songs we have to purge out the bad ones!

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I would ask prospective clients if there is space to make suggestions or if the requirements are structured and to be adhered to.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be as clear as possible with what is required of me to deliver to your project and give me feedback!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: 1. My computer w/ Logic Pro X 2. My mic 3. Audio Interface 4. Headphones 5. my black Akai MPK

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I would like to perform my music all over the world and work with amazing artists. I have been doing music off and on for over the last decade. I am ready to take the next step and really work on my craft and gift even more.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is soulful, eclectic, jazzy with clear tone.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Raphael Saadiq, Ari Lennox, Babyface and Masego

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Based on my experience thus far, one production tip I use is to constantly free-write and never throw away any free-write; I keep a journal of all my free-writes that may be bad and use them as reference for a song lyric later. It may not be used word for word but it can be used differently later in time when working on a new project and when I am stuck. This acts like an index of my own lyrics.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on soul/Rnb music. I also enjoy working on alternative RnB music as well as house tracks.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my vocal ability and ability to take direction very well based on instructions from the producer and/or engineer. I am also skilled at melody writing (and its also 2nd funnest thing for me after singing!)

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Aside from my vocals, I bring vocal arrangement, lyrical and melodic production.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Usually I get a beat and hum gibberish to it first; this is to solidify the best melody for the song. Once the melody is to my satisfaction, I figure out what subject matter I want to write about in the song. Sometimes subject matter is based on the feeling I am getting from the music or based off of what I feel like expressing in the song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a home studio set up. Very rarely will I go into a professional studio unless it is to work on another artists project.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Vocally, I am inspired by the works of Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan, Anita Baker, Beyonce, Luther Vandross, and Whitney Houston. When it comes to songwriting I am deeply influenced by Stevie Wonder, Jazmine Sullivan, Aretha Franklin, and Mariah Carey.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work I do for clients are lending lead vocals, background vocals, vocal arrangement and melody and lyric writing.
