Interview with Oliver Podmore
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from my studio equipped with a Neumann TLM 102 into Apollo Twin interface, studio monitors, headphones, and Logic Pro x. This setup allows me to deliver professional recordings remotely, ensuring clarity, warmth, and precision. I have a huge list of plug ins I use to shape my vocal including Melodyne, Fab filter EQ, Isotope RX, FabFilter Pro-C 2 and many more.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m particularly proud of my time in the band Plastic House, where I co-wrote and performed on all tracks. My role was lead vocalist and co-songwriter, and I loved shaping the melodies and harmonies that defined our sound. I’m also proud of a recent EDM collaboration where I recorded layered vocals that became a key hook in the track, and seeing it get streamed widely felt incredibly rewarding.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently releasing new solo material across pop and EDM, collaborating with other artists, and doing session vocal work for a range of electronic and rock tracks. I’m also exploring songwriting projects for upcoming clients.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’ve collaborated with several talented producers and engineers on SoundBetter and would recommend anyone with strong references and a portfolio that aligns with the client’s project. Specific recommendations depend on the genre and style the client is looking for.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I primarily work digital because it’s versatile and allows me to deliver high-quality recordings remotely. Digital workflows make editing, comping, and collaboration much faster, which is essential for modern production timelines. That said, I appreciate the warmth and character of analog equipment and sometimes incorporate analog gear for specific textures or vocal tones.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver professional, emotive vocals that bring their songs to life. I’ll communicate clearly, respect deadlines, and collaborate closely to ensure the final product matches their vision. My goal is always to elevate the track and exceed expectations.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most about my job is helping bring someone else’s vision to life. I love connecting emotionally with a song, finding the right tone and delivery, and knowing that my voice can elevate a track and make it resonate with listeners. Collaborating with different artists and producers across genres keeps every project exciting and creatively fulfilling.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: “Can you hit this note or style?” A: Yes, I’m versatile across pop, EDM, house, and rock, and I can adapt my vocal tone to fit your track. Q: “How fast can you deliver?” A: Standard delivery is usually 2–4 days, depending on the project. Rush requests can be accommodated for an additional fee. Q: “Can you write or help with melodies?” A: Absolutely — I can provide melodic suggestions, harmonies, or full songwriting services for an extra fee.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Some people assume recording vocals is just “singing into a mic.” In reality, it’s about delivering emotion, timing, pitch, and dynamics in a way that enhances the entire track.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask about the song’s genre, mood, vocal style, preferred delivery format, and any reference tracks they love. This ensures I tailor my performance to the client’s vision.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear about your vision and the feeling you want from the track. Communication is key, and providing references or examples helps me deliver exactly what you’re looking for.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Condenser mic, audio interface, laptop with DAW, headphones, and a small MIDI keyboard. These would allow me to record, produce, and arrange music anywhere.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started in a band called Plastic House, performing and recording professionally. Now I release solo music and collaborate with other artists. I’ve been performing and recording for over 12 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Energetic, emotive, and versatile — I can deliver powerful rock belts, smooth pop phrasing, or vibrant EDM hooks depending on what the track needs.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists like Calvin Harris or Halsey because they push boundaries in electronic pop and create tracks that are both catchy and emotionally resonant.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always leave space in the arrangement for the vocals to breathe. Even the best vocal performance can get lost if the instrumentation is too busy.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Primarily pop, EDM, house, and rock, but I’m open to experimenting with other genres as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Delivering expressive, polished vocals that suit the style and mood of the track while maintaining consistency and pitch accuracy.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring energy, emotion, and professional polish. My goal is to elevate a track with vocals that feel authentic and connect with the listener. I also offer creative input on melodies, harmonies, and phrasing when needed.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by listening to the track and understanding the vibe the client wants. I focus on capturing the emotion and performance first, then refine timing, pitch, and harmonies. I often provide multiple takes so the client can choose what fits best, and I’m happy to collaborate on revisions.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide professional vocals for a wide range of genres including pop, EDM, house, and rock. This usually involves recording lead vocals, harmonies, ad-libs, or background layers to help bring a song to life. I also offer songwriting and vocal arrangement suggestions when requested.
