Hey there! My name is Jan Kohrt and I´m a professional drummer from Germany. You are looking for high quality drums, that are recorded live with feel and groove? You've come to the right place! Let´s start!
I offer live tracked drums for lots of different genres. I am mainly familiar with rock/pop and prog music but of course I´m also able to play Jazz, Funk or Fusion.
After we discussed all details, I will record my drums and send you a high quality mp3 demo of your music with my drums. If you´re happy with the result, I will send you all individual tracks of the recorded drums.
Recording:
I record *16 regular channels of drums into Cubase 11 Pro trough the Soundcraft UI24R.

Interview with Jan Kohrt
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Hybrid ;) both sides have advantages and disadvantages.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Hi there! What I need from you is: 1. Your full name/band name 2. Web site/social media pages for you and/or your projects 3. Timeframe for starting and completing the project 4. Other musicians who may be playing on the project 5. Your budget for my service (I´m always open to talk about it) 6. A link to view or download the track (or a concept/similar track you have done). DO NOT ATTACH FILES TO YOUR E-MAIL. Please use WeTransfer, Dropbox, or a similar service. Thank you :) Now it's time for me to get behind the drums!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: a practice pad, a metronome and 3 pairs of sticks ;)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I´ve started playing the drums when I was 10 years old. After playing with many different local bands I joined the Amsterdam (NL) based progressive rock/metal band "ABRAHAM SARACHE". Afterwards I also got in touch with the German band "Frolllein Motte" and the American singer/songwriter Troy Petty. Besides all of those projects, I´ve always loved studio work because you can be way more creative, I think.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is probably a mix of all my influences and the music I listen to.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually rock/pop or prog music. But I am also open to anything else.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: All my mics run through the Soundcraft UI24R directly into Cubase 11 Pro on my mac.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is my professional attitude and work mentality. I want to be happy with the product and I want to make you happy!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like the creative aspect that comes with everything music related! It's also absolutely awesome for me to be able to do the thing I love most.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: "Recording drums doesn't take time, it's super easy and super cheap." It takes a lot of time to master the instrument so that you are able to record something for clients from all around the world. It also takes a lot of equipment (like microphones etc.) to make the drums sound as good as possible and microphone friendly, so it's not cheap at all.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Explain your project as detailed as possible right from the start, as it will make the process of recording and writing drum parts a lot faster and stress-free for both sides :)
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would really like to work with Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani or Nick Johnston.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I would consider this more of a recording tip in one word: consistency
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Keeping it simple when it needs to be.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Fluent groove and hopefully unique ideas.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If there´s a demo I will of course listen to it, collect ideas and try out different things. I usually record 3 or 4 takes and then pick the one with the best vibe.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by drummers like Simon Phillips, Vinnie or Gavin Harrison. Warren Huart is a big engineer hero of mine.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Tracking live drums.
