Interview with AZODi

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Pitching new K-Pop songs as always, creating content about K-Pop music production and writing sessions with topliners via Zoom.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: I need to look through more profiles!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. They both offer something great.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You will get a professional sounding K-Pop production. You will get regular communication

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I get to create every day. I get to work with awesome, skilled people. Something I find incredibly rewarding and the feeling of working towards something bigger.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How did you get into K-Pop? I tell them that quick story I mentioned earlier haha

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: It's easy, somehow 'less' than other genres and something you can 'knock up' quickly. I think that goes for most genres from others who haven't worked in that style before.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Artist Background? Release Plan? References? Definitely Does Want? Definitely Doesn’t Want? Project Deadline? Project Budget / Rate?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Have a clear vision for what you want!

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: Started played piano and steel pans at school then guitar. Formed a band after attending BIMM during 2005, peak MySpace era which led on to supporting big american acts in the UK, performing to 25k + people at Wembley Stadium (...carpark lol) for a Nike event, European tours and writing with some top level producers and writers. Between 2011 - 2017 I developed production skills and went on to write for brands such as BBC, Superdry and video game companies such as Square Enix. Scored horror movies with channel 4 actors such as Matt King (Peep Show) and won an award in Tokyo for my musical score. I started K-Pop pitching on and off from 2012 through til now. Early 2018 I decided to cancel everything and commit to only K-Pop, few months after I landed a publishing deal within Korea and Japan and carried on ever since.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Create a significant shift in verse 2 as this is almost always used as a rap section in K-Pop. We want to provide a new platform for the member to showcase their rap skills.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: K-Pop with some Pop Punk / Rock.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: Creating emotion in music. Crossing worlds in productions.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: A blend of Korean and Western style music production that is rare to find. Almost 2 decades of songwriting experience and 14 years of music production experience.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: I'll start off with a few questions understanding what the client needs, usually starts with email then a quick call. After that point I get them on a creative call which takes about 40 - 60 minutes where I can ask in more detail and write down everything they want and understand their vision for the song. We establish vision, references, time frames, money and splits. Once the first payment has been made after that call I start writing. I get them a demo usually up to the first A chorus and wait for their feedback. Just to see if the song is heading in the right direction. I like to book fortnightly calls with the client to check in and see how they are feeling / going. I like to treat the client as if I were their music consultant as well as the song producer.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: PC, Cubase 12, Focal Shape monitors, Schecter Omen 6 Guitar, JDI box w/ Komplete Audio 6. Mostly work with Serum, ANA2 + Splice samples. Everything is created from scratch with the occasional loop from Splice (which I mess up!)

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: No one in particular but I deeply respect the producers and writers who can create something truly original, innovate in their music and push the genre and idea of K-Pop forward.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: The most common type of work for my clients is to produce songs in the style of K-Pop. Clients vary between leads from my publisher in Seoul and K-Pop inspired solo artists based in the US who find me via YouTube / online.
