    Interview with CJ

    1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

    2. A: SIFA. Me and all my friends started a band out of nothing, and toured the midwest in a year. We made a lot of memories, and friends along the way. We were all babies, I just being 19 at the time, so we were unaware of what life was about to do to us after. Great times, great music, great cities!

    3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

    4. A: A Dance Gavin Dance type of album with a close friend. Also finishing an EP by a hardcore group known as Alarm Tactics, and all the personal projects that come with being a producer!

    5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

    6. A: Not currently, but as I go forward I will always recommend those who are solid!

    7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

    8. A: Both, best of both worlds. More head room in digital, but more warmth in analog. Find a way to use both, in any medium!

    9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

    10. A: To give you the best possible quality, at the most reasonable prices. I am not a commercial studio, so I try to give the old "mom and pop" feel.

    11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

    12. A: The freedom of expression, and the reaction of those who are passionate and fulfilled by the music made.

    13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

    14. A: "How can I begin to do this?" I just tell them, "Do it. Start today, because you will be farther than tomorrow if you didn't."

    15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

    16. A: It happens overnight. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it just. takes. time.

    17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

    18. A: What "sound" do you like in a mix? What was the process? Do you have any more ideas you want to try?

    19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

    20. A: Please have 1-2 references for what you'd like to have your mix song close to. Always be thorough and honest, as that gets the best quality of music possible. Always feel free to reach out too!

    21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

    22. A: MacBook Pro, 5 String Jazz Bass, Line 6 m13, Focusrite 4i4, and a few cables. It would last for about 3 hours, but it would be fun.

    23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

    24. A: Since I was 14. I have toured and recorded records since I was 16, so I grew up in this environment.

    25. Q: How would you describe your style?

    26. A: Organic, and Raw.

    27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

    28. A: Joey Sturgis. He has a very unique look at heavy music, so being able to work would inspire me to think outside of what I am used to.

    29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

    30. A: Don't Over Think Sh*t. Live by it.

    31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

    32. A: Metal and Rap currently, but anything really. Anything to expand horizons.

    33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

    34. A: Mixing, and playing bass.

    35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

    36. A: Clarity, Inspiration, and Balls.

    37. Q: What's your typical work process?

    38. A: Straight forward, break it downs yep by step and thoroughly going through every element of sound.

    39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

    40. A: Efficient. 2012 15in Retina MackBook Pro, with Focusrite 18i10, running Ableton Suite and ProTools.

    41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

    42. A: Victor Wooten, Gary Willis, Marcus Miller, all the way to Knocked Loose, Kublai Khan, and Sunami.

    43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

    44. A: Mixing for any genre of music, as well as Session Bass services.
