Interview with David Wiergo
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I’m dedicated to delivering a result they’re genuinely happy with. If they’re not satisfied, they won’t be charged.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: An instrumental electric guitar piece I worked on. The final mix was night and day compared to the original. I did the mixing on that project.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because it's convenient, and with today's technology, you can achieve great results.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the process of transforming a raw sound into a final track that’s ready to be listened and enjoyed.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It's that mixing is just about balancing volume or making things louder. In reality, it’s a more detailed process that takes time and attention to get the sound right.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about: The type of final sound they're looking for and request examples of songs to get a clearer understanding of what they are looking for. If they'd prefer a dynamic mix or a more compressed, modern sound. If they'd like me to focus solely on mixing or if they'd prefer suggestions for production, sounds, arrangements, and possibly adding new instruments. I check what medium their music will be released, so I can tailor the mix to suit that platform.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Starts by understanding the client's vision. I work on the project, get their feedback along the way, and refine the sound until we got the final result.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Rest assured that I’ll work with you until you're happy with the result.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I'd take a computer with a DAW, an audio interface, a pair of headphones, and a good set of monitors. That way, I’d have everything I need to create and mix music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with artists who are passionate about their music and truly believe in what they're creating.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t focus too much on the screen, trust your ears and the sound you’re creating.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with Rock and Pop, but I'm comfortable mixing in other styles as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'd say listening, both to the music and to the artist. I really focus on understanding what they want.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: It depends on the final goal, but I aim to bring clarity, balance, and energy that elevate the track while keeping the essence of the song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in the box because it’s more convenient and versatile.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically focus on mixing and recording guitar tracks, but I also produce when needed to enhance the overall sound.
