Interview with Andrés Mazuera
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: - I've been producing an artist called "Paola Pachon" and it was a challenge to make something electro-pop with Spanish lyrics but with a modern and natural sound! well... I did it! I was in the entire process, songwriting, production, and mixing("Hoy Paso pagina" - Paola P on Spotify) - I was also part of the last album of Generacion 12 and it was a great challenge with the live recording!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Music production for artist and Original music for a short film
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at this moment! I hope to know a lot of professionals in the audio and production field to be better!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! 80% digital, 20% analog... Today, There are A LOT of tools and plugins to emulate analog sound... If you have the chance to work 100% analog... it's ok! Great! Do it! but if not, you can work on the box and get a professional sound! ALL YOU NEED IS GREAT EARS and knowledge of each software and plugin!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will not abandon the song or project until you are so satisfied and so happy!!! You will have a professional and catchy sound! ;)
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: No matter how much I have to do... I REALLY ENJOY TO CREATE and MIX MUSIC! The client's satisfaction is one of my main goals!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: - If I have a lot of work, could we negotiate the cost? ABSOLUTELY!!! - Could you record all kinds of organic instruments? ABSOLUTELY!!! - I have one last revision, could you help me? Of course!!!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Music Producer = Beat Maker Fast delivery, It doesn't cost too much... =/
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: - Is this a one-time job or is it a long-term collaboration? - Do you have a reference for the sound you're looking for? - If I consider it, Could I change or suggest something to your song or project?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Take a look at his work, look for commercial sound, responsibility, honesty, and customer loyalty
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: - Computer - Audio Interface - MIDI Keyboard - Microphone - Headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started to work in Music Production in 2009, My first professional work was with children's music for "Generacion 12 Kids", then, I start to collaborate with "Generacion 12" as a co-producer and guitar player. I started to build my own arrangements, a lot of electric and acoustic guitar recordings, and editing. Then I started to mix and because of that, my production got a higher level. To this day, music production is my full-time job, working with artists and companies making all kinds of music! I count on a great portfolio and demo reel. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/10wpfnsnvap8gjj/AACNKySOUCvTKZfyjjYSfMYJa?dl=0
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style has been growing and maturing with time and all kinds of work! I'm sure to provide something unique and very custom music. Great and creative transitions, and very catchy guitar arrangements.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: All kinds of artists with enough talent to sing and interpret their own songs and ideas! The rest is on me!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Every time you make a song from scratch based on a reference song... Just try to listen 1-2 times, no more! This is to avoid building something very similar... Extract concepts like structure, how many chords by section, Which are the main instruments, and pay attention to the transitions. Once you get these notes, you can start on the chorus with a couple of synths, Drums, and Bass... The song is gonna ask you the rest for itself! ;)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: All kind of electro(EDM, Dance, House, etc), Folk, Pop, Worship Music, Orchestral
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Composing, Music Production, and Mixing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: - Professional and Comercial Sound - Catchy Music Arrangements and Quality Recordings - I almost try to connect with the artist's vision and translate that into a full arrangement
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Full Music Production: - I receive the song with voice and piano/guitar tracks and the reference - I send a demo version with all the music arrangements and a rough mix. - Once the demo is approved, I start the mixing(with 1-2 revisions) - Mastering. I deliver 3 WAV files, an Instrumental version, and Stems. Sound Desing: - Demo version with all SFX, Foleys, and Original Music - Once approved, I polish the mix and deliver the full mix, music and SFX stems
