Interview with Sam Loose
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: This changes almost every day, so it's difficult to know who will be reading this when, but some recent projects have included mixing several metal albums, some classic rock, some punk, some musical theatre, some radio edits for charting rock acts, no two days are the same and that's the way I like it!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A great finished product comes from a great recording of a great song. If all the pieces of the puzzle are in place then getting a fantastic final master is within everyone's reach, but a mixer isn't a miracle worker; you need a good recording before it can be elevated to the next level with a mix.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a musician for well over 20 years, and moved into the studio around 15 years ago. Having a musical ear and a background in performing gives me a unique insight into the music creation process, and allows me to hear the music how the musicians hear it, as opposed to solely from a technical standpoint.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Day to day I work on "rock format" music; guitars, drums, vocals, keyboards, but I love being thrown a curve ball every once in a while!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: 100% digital. The allure of analog gear is tempting, but I truly believe there isn't anything that can be done in the analog world that can't be done in digital with the correct tools, ears, and knowledge.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the variety that this job brings; no two days are ever the same. Artists always surprise me with how creative they can be, and I enjoy the surprise of the twists and turns a song can take.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in an acoustically treated space with all the tools necessary to make your tracks sound the best they possibly can. I don't rely on gear that looks great in pictures, I rely on the tools that get the job done quickly and effectively.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I typically work on "rock format" music; drums, guitars, bass, keyboards, vocals. I love getting a curve ball thrown at me every once in a while, but week to week I find myself working on rock music that needs to sound massive, and that's what I deliver.
