Interview with Dennis Mitchell
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of was working with Keith Sweat in the mid-’90s at INS Studios. I was the recording engineer on the session, focused on capturing clean, high-quality vocals and maintaining a smooth workflow. What stood out was the relaxed, professional vibe—he brought a calm, confident energy that translated directly into the performance. Being part of that environment reinforced the importance of capturing the moment and getting it right at the source.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on a mix of recording sessions and mixing projects, focusing on delivering clean, professional sound for each artist I work with.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: NO
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I use a hybrid approach. Digital gives me precision and flexibility, while analog gear adds character and warmth—combining both allows me to get the best possible sound. But my hart is in ANALOG
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise clear communication, attention to detail, and a final product that sounds clean, balanced, and ready for release.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy helping artists bring their ideas to life and hearing a track go from a rough recording to a polished, finished record.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most clients ask about turnaround time and revisions. I typically deliver within a few days and include revisions to make sure the final result matches their vision.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A common misconception is that mixing a good mix give you a hit song. And thats not true. A great mix starts with a solid recording—my job is to enhance what’s already there and bring it to a professional level.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask what sound they’re aiming for and if they have any reference tracks. That helps me understand their vision and make sure we’re aligned from the start.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working in audio for over 30 years, starting in the early ’90s and developing my skills through hands-on studio experience. My career path has been focused on building a strong portfolio, working directly with artists, and consistently refining my approach to recording, mixing, and delivering professional-quality sound.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: There are a lot of artists I’d love to work with, but Justin Timberlake stands out for his attention to detail and ability to blend strong vocals with polished production. That level of precision and musicality is something I really respect.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who communicates clearly, understands your vision, and has a portfolio that matches the sound you’re aiming for. A good working relationship is just as important as technical skill.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A reliable audio interface, studio headphones, a laptop with my DAW, a high-quality microphone, and a versatile channel strip to shape the sound.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Clean, balanced, and detail-oriented, with a focus on making vocals sit naturally while still cutting through the mix.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on getting the vocal right first—if the vocal sits perfectly in the mix, everything else becomes much easier to build around.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on hip-hop, R&B, and melodic/afrobeats-influenced records, with a strong focus on vocal-driven music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is vocal recording and mixing—capturing clean performances and shaping them into polished, industry-ready records.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, balance, and a professional finish to every track. My focus is on enhancing the artist’s vision while making sure the song sounds clean, cohesive, and ready for release on all platforms.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I split my time between recording sessions and mixing/mastering. I focus on capturing clean vocals first, then shaping the mix for balance and impact. I prefer stem mastering, as it gives me more control and helps achieve a louder, more polished final result.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a boutique space in Brooklyn built for focused, comfortable sessions. Using customized Neotek EQs and Scorpion channel strips, I’m able to capture clean vocals and deliver polished mixes that translate well across all platforms.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m influenced by Bob Katz , Mike Dean and Jaycen Joshua—especially their ability to create clean, impactful records that still feel unique.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily work on vocal recording and mixing, helping artists turn raw recordings into polished, release-ready tracks. My focus is on clean vocals, balanced mixes, and a sound that competes on today’s streaming platforms.
