Interview with BLVNK

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: The final result, it's so satisfying to see all those messages and smiley faces when people hear the demo for the first time. It's always like 'Did you produce the entire song from scratch to make it sound so good?' or 'Wow, is that my voice? It's sick!'.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: My bachelor's dissertation 'Achieving professional sound in your bedroom'. I had to produce the album, record vocals, edit everything and at the end mix & master it. Then I had to explain everything step by step and prove that your music can sound as good as professional recordings released on major labels; the only thing you need is knowledge.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. There are things you can do better with analog. Like compression or distortion. Digital VST can't do the same thing. For example, digitals equalizers are not that good at boosting frequencies. Analog EQs are the game changers.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will achieve the sound you're looking for.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: -Can you fix that for me, please? - Yes, I will.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: People think it's just pressing buttons and it's not a real job. It's a lot of knowledge, experience, and practice.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I want to listen to their questions and requests first. Then I ask for one/two reference tracks to know which way I should go with my mixing. I also ask them questions if they want to use their vocal chains or some other effect chains. Why? People work on their demos for hours/weeks/months and they want to achieve some kind of sound. I can't just take the raw recording and do it my own way, it'll lose the value it had before mixing.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Make sure they mix and master the music genre you produce.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Macbook, headphones, Mic (preferably tml 103), Audio interface, Juno 106.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started my musical journey in 2013. I was a DJ, then started producing. In 2020, I graduated from BIMM London (Music Production Course). After that, worked as mixing and mastering engineer for a commercial music company in Poland. I also had a chance to mix and master Polish artists like Barnim, Tymek, Karolina Stanisławczyk, Frank Leen and more.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Clean, tight, punchy, creative, and sometimes aggressive.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: As a producer, I'd love to have a studio session with Dua Lipa. Her voice and energy work well together. We'll definitely cook some good music there.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Make sure you have space for every sound in your track. If there are 3 synths or instruments in the same frequency range, consider prioritizing or filtering them. Don't overcook your music.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I usually work on EDM, pop, and trap music.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: I love mixing bass and drums. These things are very important, especially in dance or trap music. That's where the energy of the track comes from. Keeping them tight, punchy, and juicy is definitely my cup of tea.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I respect the producer's artistic choices and I never change the entire track into something completely different. I keep my mix as close to the original 'demo sound' but much cleaner, smoother and tighter. I also do some creative things like adding extra effects on adlibs or BVs to achieve more interesting sound.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I start by understanding the producer - how he'd like to have it mixed and mastered. Then I listen to similar songs and compare them to the demo I got. After that, I start the mixing process. Nextly, when the entire mix is nice and clean; I master the track. The whole process usually takes 2-3 days.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: I am inspired by Luca Pretolesi, amazing mixing & mastering engineer.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I do mixing and mastering for clients. I also clean vocals, tune them and correct timing issues. After it's done, I also suggest some tips for further productions.
