Interview with Sam O'Jan
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The latest release with 4 other producers, we collaborated on a chillout boom bap summary song called, Socks on the Beach. My role was to create the percussions and mix the track!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital! Technology now can gibe even better results than Analog gear with someone who doesn't know how to use it anyway!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That anyone can do it!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your vision for the song? What does the song mean to you?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choose someone you feel comfortable working with. No one wants to work with tricky people.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: PC, Microphone, Monitors, Interface and a midi controller (keys+pads) that is all you need to make a song!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Stay consistent with creating, even if you feel yourself in a creative block! Good things when you don't expect it!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Chillout, LoFi, Electronic, pop, lounge, latin
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My mixing style is more artistic and subjective, I like to get the permission of the producer/artist to do some artistic moves within boundaries. I like to put my own view and style in a song through mixing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually provide mixing and mastering services. From time to time, I provide full song/beat production.
