Interview with Satyam Savaran

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I did everything on Ishq Tera, a song released by me. I take pride in that work of mine.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I've got a goal to release 100 songs before I turn 25, I'm 22.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Both have advantages and disadvantages, it's better to work in conjunction with the two rather than in isolation. I, however, work digitally because of the limitations of my gear.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You 'WILL' not be disappointed.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: It allows me to express myself freely.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Can you do it for free? NO.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That, it's cheap because I can do it fairly easily.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is the goal of the song? What do you want to convey? What are your inspirations? Do you have any songs for reference?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Go through our discography and decide if it's something you desire.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: A laptop with a DAW, a mic, a pair of audio monitors, a MIDI keyboard, and an audio interface

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been writing for a very long time and incidentally, in higher school, I was introduced to FL Studio by a YouTube video. That led me to music production because it allowed me to recite my poems more melodically. But later musicality became much more important. Taking everything into consideration, I have been writing songs since I was 12-13 years old, so I think I have been doing this for almost a decade.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Unique. I have yet to listen to a song that sounds similar to mine.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: A R Rahman, it's a long shot but I love his work.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Don't be afraid to try something new, even if it looks absurd.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Pop and Indie-pop, Electronic music with a lot of classical Indian inspiration.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Writing.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Soothing melodies, calmness, progressive excitement, a new and unique lyrical touch, catchy phrases and so much more.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I begin by composing a chord progression or a melody and then listening to it repeatedly, I try to write a complementary melody and after that, it's just following that flow that brings out words automatically. Flow is important and impromptu is no big deal as I find myself constantly in that flow.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: It's not the greatest. Probably one of the worst. A laptop that barely works, a cheap mic, and an Audio Technica M50x monitor.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: The one musician that has always inspired me is A R Rahman. I think he has been one of the reasons that enabled me to explore a plethora of genres.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Well, it most often includes writing lyrics and top-line melodies. Often musicians send me their lyrics to proofread and edit. I do, also, compose and produce songs in various genres. The genre I find most comfortable is pop/indie-pop with classic Indian inspiration.
