Interview with JuuL
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Chris Lorde Alge because he has learned his way to where he is today and he has got a very simplistic but correct way to approach a song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Do not try to make all instruments in a track sound beautiful: in a track, in order for some elements to shine, others need to be in the background to support that.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I love R&B, soul, and pop music, but, I have worked before with Rock projects as well.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My goal is to match the clients expectations as much as possible. My approach is to make the "star" elements of the song the drivers of the song and everything else "supporting acts" - that is the way I believe brings balance to a track and does not take the listener's attention from what is driving the song. I like to ask every client for a few reference tracks to try to match the sound I create with.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I am a full time worker on another job, therefore, my workflow is usually best on weekends and days off. I like to first listen to the song as it is provided by the client and identify the main elements of the song and mix everything around those elements. Those elements are usually the vocals, drums and in some genres guitars or a few synths or keyboards. As I am developing the project I compare it with the clients references.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I produce, record and mix my projects on my home studio in Oxford, UK:
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Creatively as a singer and producer I am inspired by R&B artists like Alicia Keys, Usher, Mari J Blidge and more contemporary artists like Kehlani, Chris Brown, H.E.R. and SZA. My mixing examples are Chris Lorde Alge, Mosty, Jason Joshua and Dave Pensado.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I have producing and recording my own projects for over 6 years now. Recently, I have been more focused towards mixing and production jobs, however, I have great experience in tracking vocals and keyboards as well.
