Interview with Otis English
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: So far my own artist project is what Im most proud of. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing songs you wrote, sang on, played almost every instrument on, and produced come out and get great recognition.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I'm writing for my own artist project and producing many different acts.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Jessica Ashley Karpov is a very good friend of mine who introduced me to SoundBetter. She's awesome at what she does and is a pleasure to work with.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It depends on what I'm doing. For example, Using a Neve Console to mix a Future song doesn't really make sense and mixing a Jazz band entirely in the box wouldn't make sense either.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll leave you feeling stronger about your music than when you first came to me.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Meeting other people as passionate about music as I am. Its a great feeling.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What styles of music are you inspired by? What is the end goal? What is your vision? What can I do that makes this process as easy for you as possible?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you want and be straight forward. I am offering a service for YOU. If you're unhappy with then I didn't do my job right and theres no point in you walking away unsatisfied. My feelings aren't a priority for me, yours are.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: a laptop, an sm57, an 1176 compressor, a telecaster, and a Fender Deluxe amp
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've done all kinds of work in the music industry. From being a session Vocalist, Guitarist, and Bassist to producing and engineering tracks for artists of many different genres to remixes and programming and everything in-between. Im a passionate student of music and I strive to constantly learn and grow. Which leads me into all facets of making and creating music. In the past year I've released tracks from my own Artist project that have done extremely well grossing over 2 million streams on just 2 songs. Both song reached the number 1 song on Hypemachine and the number 1 song on Apple Music's singer songwriter list.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: big and tasteful
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Tough to answer but probably Radiohead. I love how innovative and smart they are with their sound design and song writing.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It doesn't matter what the process is, the only thing that matters is what comes out of the speakers.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Ive worked on everything from Country to Jazz to Electronic to Metal. No genre is foreign to me.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would have to say my ear is my biggest weapon. Feel is what Im best at.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Whatever it is thats asked of me, Im confident in my ability to be the glue that holds each piece together. I understand all types of genres and what makes them unique. Stylistically I can fit into any situation.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Workflow is entirely dependent on the session. I always like to start by getting to know the client as best I can. I pick their brains, find out what style they like, understand the end goal. From their I decide which is the best route to take for what they want. If a song needs to be mixed, Ill do it at my home studio. If they need a vocal with a specific mic, Ill head over to Chalice and get it done the right way. Cutting corners is never an option for me.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio as well as full access to Chalice Recording which is one of LA's premier studios. My personal arsenal is humble yet powerful. I use a 2012 3.6 ghz 12-core Mac Pro loaded with tons of plugins and VST's. My go to software is Universal Audio, Waves, Native instruments, and Arturia. Chalice Recording has an incredible amount of new and vintage hardware as well as a vast collection of microphones, guitars, and amps I can use at my disposal. However my private recording hardware is simple but powerful. I have a Universal Audio Apollo 8p interface with a 8 core satellite, a Universal Audio 6176, as well as tons of guitars, amps and pedals. Anything you need or tone you want, I can get it done
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I have an extremely eclectic yet specific taste in music. As a child I grew up listening to classic rock and pop such as David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles as well as old school blues and R&B such as Parliament Funkadelic, James Brown, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye. That upbringing sparked my curiosity with music that has led me down a long road of discovering artist's and acts of all genres. Im a music geek. Always have been, Always will be.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Ive worked as a session Vocalist, Guitarist, and Bassist in Los Angeles since I was a Teenager. Ive worked along side the industries most demanding professionals with grace. From doing that I began producing and engineering myself as well as other acts for the past 4 years with excellent results. I pride myself in the ability to fit into any hat asked of me.
