Giancarlo Canetti on SoundBetter

I have done sync music for Warner Brothers and VICE TV. I produced, mixed and mastered records with millions of streams. My work has been showcased on CloudKid, MrSuicideSheep and 7Clouds (a combined total of >40million subscribers) and editorial playlist support. I have produced successful records in lots of genres for many labels globally.

Hello! My name is Giancarlo and I am a producer, mixing and mastering engineer from the UK. After graduating Oxford University, I began producing, mixing and mastering my own records which were signed to some of the biggest independent labels in the US and Germany (mag musik, bonfire recs) and received support from major YouTube blogs (Cloudkid, MrSuicideSheep, 7Clouds, Trap Nation etc.) garnering millions of streams.

I also do sync and production music free-lance and have worked with large enterprises such as Warner Brothers and VICE TV. I now run a record label called 1Pop, where I take care of the production, mixing and mastering for all of our artists, ranging from hip-hop to folk and even techno. These songs regularly land editorial playlists, do well in the Spotify algorithmic playlists and are supported by award-winning blogs and magazines.

I can help you to bring your music to life and give advice on the best ways for independent artists to gain traction. I can also leverage my connections with several independent labels and music blogs to give you the best chance of being signed or gaining exposure. I always work as closely as I can with clients and I'm very receptive to your ideas and feedback. I am here to make your song sound as good as possible, whether it needs producing from scratch or the final details, whilst also ensuring it has its own unique character.

Send me an email through 'Contact' button above and I'll get back to you asap.

Working with Gianni was a pleasure - he added a level of professionalism to the mixing and mastering of my track that took it to another level. It was easy to provide feedback on the mix and the results sound amazing.

I work for an independent record label. Gianni has produced, mixed and mastered multiple releases of ours. Some of which have been featured in Spotify editorial playlists, major online music blogs and have racked up millions of streams due to the high quality. Gianni has always been extremely professional and timely and it would be a pleasure to work with him again.

Interview with Giancarlo Canetti

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My first release as an artist many years ago. Even though it wasn't the best as I was just starting my journey the song has amassed a few million streams and it allowed me to step into the industry properly.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently producing, mixing and mastering the music for all of the artists signed to my record label. I also continually work on sync music for films, adverts, TV programs, games etc. and work closely with Warner Brothers in this regard.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not that I know of but I am sure there are lots of talented producers and engineers here!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: A mix. Analog gear is great for adding that magic sparkle and a bit of saturation really helps. But it is a pain to work with lots of analog gear and these days there are some amazing emulation plugins. Rather than messing around with lots of analog gear, I would advise people that less is more. Invest in a few quality pieces to get excellent source material.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To deliver a great record that represents you! And ongoing communication to incorporate all of your ideas and follow through on your vision.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love making music and I love helping others to make their music sound great.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: People sometimes worry about 'giving away control' to someone else. I always re assure people that it is THEIR record and my job is to just bring it to life according to their specifications.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That you need expensive gear to make a great record. But it helps. Especially for live recordings, then you kinda do need it actually...

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: If I am helping to produce a song from scratch I will want to understand the direction the client wants to take the song, any influences they have, any stylistic preferences etc. and this process will be ongoing. For mixing and mastering work I usually ask for a few reference tracks.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure that your provider is receptive to your ideas and feedback so that they can help to really bring your record to life.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Pearlman TM1 ADAM A7X Piano Laptop Power Bank (otherwise the rest is useless)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been playing the piano and guitar since I was 5 years old, but I started producing music and learning to engineer when I was 16 (about 8 years ago). I have been doing it full time for the past 4 years after a series of successful records.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Minimal but creative

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Kanye - amazing producer and an interesting guy

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is more! Get a quality source file (if you can) and stop adding so many plugins to it. A bit of analog saturation (or emulation of this) goes a long way.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly I work on Pop/RnB, Hip Hop and Dance music when I am producing and mixing for other artists. I do a lot of film scoring / sync music too.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I would say my ears are my best asset. I have perfect pitch, so I can identify problem frequencies quite easily and work quickly to fix issues as an engineer. When I'm producing I can create interesting vocal harmonies and chord progressions quickly and create a vibe in the session.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I try to make every song sound unique and have its own flavour. Doing this helps songs to stand out and really connect with an audience.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: It depends on the record, as no two records are the same. If I am producing a record I enjoy getting in the studio with the artist whenever possible. For film music scoring I like to just be creative and see what happens! If I am mixing/mastering I start with a mix prep to clean up the individual files and then try to get some general shape to the mix with bus processing before doing more surgical EQ and compression/sidechaining etc.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a few bits of analog gear but my pride and joy is the Pearlman TM1 microphone.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I love some of the great producers and engineers like Aphex Twin, FINNEAS, Chris Lord-Alge as well as film scorers like Hans Zimmer.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I produce, mix and master records in a variety of genres. Mainly pop/rnb, hip-hop and dance music. I work on production music for ad agencies and large enterprises like Warner Brothers. I also track vocals and instruments in my studio.
