Interview with David Sentongo

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Less is ALWAYS more. Focus on many subtle changes that come together to make something acoustically interesting, versus big/obvious/extreme things.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: I believe my ability to listen and really plug myself into a client's vision is a strong skill. That coupled with my 'ear' for acoustics. Something 'beautiful' is really a sum of MANY small and very subtle details that have been pulled together in a thoughtful way.

  5. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  6. A: I exclusively focus on composition of music records (pop and hip hop). I can also 'augment' concepts that a client sends my way.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Kimera Morrell for vocals. I absolutely LOVE her voice...but not only her voice, also her working style, communication, and the passion she brings to every project she does. When it comes to mastering, James Auwarter is EXCELLENT.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: I believe that whatever tools we have, we owe it to ourselves to master them and to produce the best sound we possibly can. Focusing on this versus analog vs. digital will take one much further.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I promise to always listen, to always be patient, and to be with you in the journey toward full expression of your idea as you see it in your mind.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: I love seeing the reaction of someone when they see and hear that their 'vision' and that idea that was always in their mind has successfully translated into reality. It is a moment of unexplainable joy and the ability to 'facilitate' that is what makes this work so special.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: They typically ask me where I get my energy, and where I find my inspiration. I tell them it comes from a combination of establishing good life habits (taking care of my body and mind), NOT comparing myself to others, and always focusing on what I can 'give' to a situation.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: The biggest conception about producing I believe is that it is just a matter of spending time in software, downloading plugins, arranging music, etc. It is really a whole life project. Having the clarity of mind to be my best self involves so many things 'outside' of the software like having a good workout regimen, like ensuring I sleep adequate hours a night, like eating well, and being disciplined about how I spend my time. I believe a HUGE part of being successful is also spending lots of time listening to others music and tuning into the 'sound' of the times. We all have our unique sound but very important to be tuned into others' creative energy as well.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: I typically want to understand their broader plan, and how they are thinking strategically about generating 'reach' for their music. Although, I am cognizant not to 'over index' on this type of questioning as I also want to make sure they are creating from a place of true authenticity and expression of themselves. I also like to ask about reference tracks (i.e. specific already released songs that are similar to their vision). It helps me to further anchor in on what they want, and my ability to help them get there.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Be open, be vulnerable, and just trust that I have your best interest in mind. I know the feeling that comes from seeing your 'idea' fully manifest itself in the world. I am deeply committed to helping you get there.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: I would bring a solar powered generator, laptop, headphones, satellite hotspot, and a tent. This would allow me to stay connected enough and also have the tools to 'convert' the many thoughts I'd have (good and bad) into production that eventually be shared with others.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: In 6th grade my piano teacher at the time put me onto the Fruity Loops software. He introduced it as a new 'dimension' to our lessons; every 4th week the expectation was for me to present something I had come up with in parallel to the classical music I was practicing. This matured into deep curiosity and interest in beat making, song composition, and sound synthesis. It has never gone away to this day. Over the last 15 years, I have produced several music projects for others, featured my music in libraries, and even landed a few TV placements.
