Interview with Jiyeop Kim
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Every project is special and important to me because all music is precious and deserves care. My role is to help each song shine while respecting its unique character and emotion.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: With over 15 years of experience across many genres, I know how to quickly identify what a song needs and deliver a polished, professional sound without overprocessing.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is understanding the purpose and intention of a song. Because I have experience in beat making, playing instruments, and music production, I can approach a mix from a musical perspective — not just a technical one — and support the song’s true direction.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I help artists turn their music into release-ready records with clarity, depth, and impact while staying true to their original vision.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: First, I always respect my client’s music. I will try to make a sound what you want.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been 15years as a Professional Recording, Mixing Engineer in South Korea. It was amazing time for me. I got Master Degree in University. and I started from assistant engineer in recording studio. I met various musician and grew up with them.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I have deep respect for musicians and their creative vision. My role is to support that vision by making the music more musical, clear, and impactful. Helping artists hear their music truly shine is the most rewarding part of my work.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have no limit to editing the mix. I will try to make a sound what you want.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If you are going to recording vocal in your home studio, you should keep distance from mic. Every cardioid microphone have a proximity effect. If you sing too close to the microphone, it makes muddy and stuffy sound. You can adjust distance to the appropriate mic by listening to the recorded voice.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, I listen to music 3~4 times. Find important elements in the arrangement. After that, let's start with the important part. Sometimes it starts with piano, vocals, bass, and drums. I enjoy the process of making the center of the groove first and completing the arrangement on top of it.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer both. Analog give me warmth, richness, true harmonic and color. Digital give me clean, precision and convenience.
