Interview with Ji-Yeop Joshua Kim

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I will try to make a sound what you want.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love to help musicians. Make music more musical. The process of making their music shine is happy.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Macbook, UAD satellite, Sennheiser HD600 headphone, ATC SCM45a and Apogee Symphony interface.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I have been 13years as a Professional Recording, Mixing Engineer in South Korea. It was amazing time for me. I got Master Degree in University. and I started from assistant engineer in recording studio. I met various musician and grew up with them.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: I have no limit to editing the mix. I will try to make a sound what you want.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: It's You!! cuz your music is special.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: If you are going to recording vocal in your home studio, you should keep distance from mic. Every cardioid microphone have a proximity effect. If you sing too close to the microphone, it makes muddy and stuffy sound. You can adjust distance to the appropriate mic by listening to the recorded voice.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Pop, Jazz, Rock, RnB, HipHop, Tango, Classical Music. I love to All Genre.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: First, I listen to music 3~4 times. Find important elements in the arrangement. After that, let's start with the important part. Sometimes it starts with piano, vocals, bass, and drums. I enjoy the process of making the center of the groove first and completing the arrangement on top of it.

  19. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  20. A: Every project is special and important to me. Because all music is precious and beautiful. My job exists to make music shine more.

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: I prefer both. Analog give me warmth, richness, true harmonic and color. Digital give me clean, precision and convenience.
