I initially hired Aaron for help learning Ableton Live but he quickly picked up that I was more comfortable using FL studio. Aaron's teaching style is very flexible and he has an in-depth understanding of music. He has gone out of his way to translate his knowledge of producing and techniques into a new DAW which he was unfamiliar with. Aaron has contributed to improving my mixes by not only showing me, but also explaining his teachings in excruciating detail so I could apply it to any part of my music.

Interview with Aaron Spacefood

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: With a lifelong love for music, cultivated by growing up with the sounds of Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Radiohead, and Moby, my professional journey into music production began over 15 years ago. My drive to pursue a career in audio started in Japan, where I found myself programming MIDI arrangements in the quiet corner of a family restaurant, offering all-you-can-drink coffee, tea, and corn chowder. Seeking to advance my knowledge, I moved back to Canada to study Audio Production & Engineering at the prestigious Metalworks Institute. This institution, renowned for its world-class recording studios and educational facilities, provided the foundation for the technical skills I rely on today. In the years that followed, my career flourished. I've had the privilege of working with award-nominated artists, international podcasts, and engaging in various ghost production projects, all while continually expanding my skills and deepening my passion for music production. Another significant aspect of my career has been sharing my knowledge and passion with others. I've taught music production, Ableton Live, and audio engineering, both online and in person at Long & McQuades across Canada. This experience has been rewarding, offering a platform to inspire and guide the next generation of music producers and sound engineers. Today, my home is a studio house tucked away in the serene mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Here, I continue to work remotely on a diverse range of music projects, each one adding a new chapter to my ongoing journey in the world of music production. My experiences – from the humble beginnings in a Japanese restaurant to teaching aspiring producers – continue to shape the music I create, carrying a legacy of passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence in every note.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: One project that holds a special place in my heart is my work on the song "Borderline" by Carson Venne. In this project, I was involved in the roles of mixing, mastering, and editing. What makes this project particularly memorable and rewarding is the tremendous impact it has had since its release. "Borderline" has garnered significant attention and traction on popular streaming platforms like Spotify. It's incredibly fulfilling to witness the success of a song I was a part of, and to see the artist, Carson Venne, gaining recognition for their talent and hard work. Working on "Borderline" was a collaborative effort, where I strived to capture and enhance the energy, emotion, and artistic vision of the song. From refining the mix to achieve sonic balance and clarity, to applying precise mastering techniques to ensure its commercial viability, every step was meticulously executed. What adds to the pride I feel for this project is the fact that Carson Venne was a student of mine. To witness their growth as an artist and to be able to contribute to their musical journey is truly rewarding. It reinforces the importance of mentorship and the joy of seeing aspiring artists thrive. Overall, the success of "Borderline" and the role I played in its production fills me with immense pride. It serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, hard work, and the impact that music can have on both the artist and the listeners.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Currently, I am working on a variety of exciting projects. These include nine electronic remixes, where I am infusing new energy and creativity into existing tracks. Additionally, I am working on ten mixes, polishing and refining the sonic balance of different songs to ensure they sound their best. In addition to that, I am also involved in the production of a musically immersive podcast that centers around the inspiring stories of environmental warriors. Through the power of music and storytelling, we aim to create a captivating audio experience that raises awareness about environmental issues and celebrates the efforts of those making a positive impact.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I prefer working with digital technology due to its compactness, affordability, and versatility. Digital tools provide a wide range of possibilities and functionalities that cater to various production needs. While analog gear is often associated with a unique warmth and depth, digital technology has made significant advancements in emulating those characteristics, delivering high-quality results. Digital equipment is more compact, allowing for efficient use of studio space and easy portability. It is also generally more affordable, making it accessible to a wider range of musicians and producers. Additionally, digital tools offer extensive flexibility and convenience, enabling seamless integration with modern workflows and providing a vast array of plugins and virtual instruments. While analog gear can provide a hands-on and tactile experience, it is not always the most economical or efficient option. Digital technology offers a more cost-effective solution without compromising on the quality and creative possibilities. Ultimately, the choice between analog and digital comes down to personal preference, budget considerations, and the specific requirements of each project.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is straightforward: I will always be honest, clear, and communicative. I'll provide transparent information about the scope, pricing, and quality of the project. Throughout our collaboration, I'll make decisions with the goal of delivering the best possible result and experience. Your satisfaction and achieving the highest quality work are my top priorities. Together, we'll work towards bringing your musical vision to life in a way that exceeds your expectations.

Overall, the satisfaction of seeing my clients happy, being part of creative collaborations, and having that caffeinated boost makes my job truly fulfilling.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customers commonly ask me a range of questions about my services, process, and capabilities. Here are a few examples along with my typical answers: "What is your experience in this genre/style of music?" I have extensive experience working with various genres and styles of music, including electronic, indie, rock, and more. I adapt my skills and techniques to suit the specific needs and artistic vision of each project. "What is your turnaround time for a project?" The turnaround time can vary depending on the complexity and scope of the project. Once we discuss the specifics of your project, I can provide you with a timeframe tailored to your specific needs. Additionally, I utilize high-quality monitoring equipment such as Genelec Monitors to ensure accurate sound reproduction.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do as a music professional is that my role is solely limited to pressing buttons and making things sound good. While technical expertise is certainly a crucial aspect of my work, there is so much more to it than meets the eye. Music production is a deeply creative and collaborative process. It requires a deep understanding of music theory, arrangement, and composition, along with the ability to capture the essence of an artist's vision. It's about translating emotions and ideas into sonic form, creating an immersive experience for the listener. Additionally, my role involves being a problem-solver and a trusted advisor. I work closely with artists, guiding them through the production process, offering creative suggestions, and helping them overcome obstacles. I aim to create an environment where artists feel supported and their artistic vision can flourish. Furthermore, I invest considerable time in staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in technology, software, and industry trends. This continuous learning is essential to ensure that I can provide the best possible service to my clients. In essence, the misconception lies in assuming that music production is solely a technical endeavor. It's a multifaceted art form that requires a blend of technical expertise, creative sensibility, and effective communication to bring a musical vision to life.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: When starting a new collaboration, it's crucial to understand my client's vision, so here are a few key questions I usually ask: "What sound are you aiming for?" This question helps me understand the sonic direction you want to take. It can refer to genre, mood, instrumentation, or any other aspect of the sound that's important to you. "Which artists or songs make your hair stand on end?" This question gives me an insight into what truly moves you, both as a listener and an artist. It helps me understand the emotional depth and impact you want your music to have. These questions are just starting points. The more we communicate, the better I can grasp your artistic vision and help bring it to life. So, don't hesitate to share all your thoughts, ideas, and inspirations with me.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: When looking to hire a music professional like me, my biggest piece of advice would be to embrace honesty and vulnerability. When you are honest about your expectations, your vision, and your constraints, it allows us to establish clear communication from the get-go. This ensures that we are on the same page and that your project goals are understood and achievable. Being vulnerable can be a bit more challenging, but it's equally as crucial. Sharing your artistic vision, including your doubts and concerns, can bring depth and authenticity to your project. Remember, the music we create together is an extension of you, so don't be afraid to dig deep and share your raw emotions and ideas. Creating music is a deeply personal process, and the more open you are, the more I can help you create something that truly resonates. So, come prepared to bare your creative soul, and together, we can make your musical dreams a reality.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I had to be stranded on a desert island and could only bring five pieces of gear, here's what I'd grab: First off, I'd snatch up my Dirtywave M8. It's like a mini music studio that fits right in my hands. Super handy for jamming out whenever inspiration hits. Next up, my trusty Genelecs. I need these babies to make sure my tracks are sounding just right. They're top-notch speakers, so I know they won't let me down. No way am I going without my coffee machine. It's not strictly music gear, sure, but anyone who knows me knows I can't make a tune without a good cup of coffee first. My M1 Computer is a must-have. It's got all the software I need for recording and producing music, and it's powerful enough to handle whatever I throw at it. Last but definitely not least, my Subpac. This nifty tool helps me feel the bass and make sure my mix is on point, no matter where I am - even on a desert island. So, there you have it. With these five items, I'd be all set to turn that desert island into a tropical music paradise.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style of music production combines careful attention to detail with creative flair. I always make sure every tiny detail is in its place to create a rich and full sound. A key part of my approach is using carefully chosen electronic sounds. These add unique character to the music and enhance its emotional impact. Whether it's a synth line that adds an exciting edge, or a sampled sound that brings contrast, these electronic elements play an important role in my work. I also use various sound manipulation techniques to make each piece unique and engaging. This could be changing the space a sound appears to come from, altering its rhythm, or changing its tone and texture. When it fits the vision for the piece, these techniques can turn a regular sound into something special. In short, my style combines precision, creativity, and innovative use of sound. The music I produce offers listeners new surprises each time they listen, and my use of electronic sounds and sound manipulation techniques ensures it's not just heard, but truly experienced.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would relish the opportunity to work with Radiohead, a band that has continually pushed the boundaries of music over their career. Their ability to innovate, taking risks with their sound while maintaining a deeply emotional and engaging connection with their audience, is genuinely inspiring. One of the things that impresses me most about Radiohead is their fearless approach to experimentation. They seamlessly blend elements from various genres, from rock to electronic to classical, crafting a sound that's unmistakably their own. Being part of such a creative process would be both a challenge and a fantastic learning opportunity. Moreover, their attention to detail in terms of production, their sophisticated use of electronic and acoustic textures, and their consistent willingness to break away from conventional song structures make them an exciting band to collaborate with.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Less is more! Avoid the temptation to over-process. While it's important to use tools and techniques to enhance the music, overusing them can often lead to a sound that is overcooked and lacks dynamics. Instead, focus on the essential elements that contribute to the song's emotional core and narrative. Use processing tools sparingly and intentionally, always aiming to preserve the natural essence of the recording. Remember, sometimes the most impactful changes are the subtle ones.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I work with a variety of music styles, mainly focusing on electronic, indie, and rock genres. In electronic music, I enjoy experimenting with different sounds and digital effects. It's creative and allows for a lot of innovation. With indie music, my goal is to enhance the emotional performances while keeping the music's unique and authentic feel. For rock music, my focus is on capturing the energy and power of the instruments, creating a mix that embodies the raw emotion and intensity of this genre. In essence, I enjoy working with different kinds of music, each presenting unique challenges and rewarding experiences.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill lies in the intricate understanding and manipulation of timing and tuning, coupled with my ability to infuse modern electronic flairs into a piece of music. This nuanced skillset allows me to enhance the natural rhythmic flow and tonal balance of a song, while also introducing contemporary elements that elevate the overall production. Whether I'm aligning drum beats or tuning vocal lines, my keen ear for timing and pitch ensures a tight, well-balanced mix that resonates with listeners. Concurrently, my expertise in electronic music production enables me to introduce innovative sonic textures and effects, imbuing each track with a unique character that reflects the modern music landscape. This synergistic combination of traditional sound engineering skills and forward-thinking electronic production techniques makes me uniquely equipped to deliver a final product that is technically precise, creatively inspiring, and relevant to today's music industry.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: As a seasoned sound engineer, I bring a wealth of experience and a nuanced understanding of the intricacies of sound to each song I work on. My contributions can be broadly categorized as follows: Technical Expertise: I bring a deep understanding of audio production, sound engineering, and the technical skills required to ensure the sonic elements of the song are perfectly balanced and polished. This includes proficiency with cutting-edge audio software, ability to remove unwanted noise, fine-tune pitch, and manage volume levels effectively. Creative Insight: Based on the song's genre, mood, and the artist's vision, I can provide creative input that elevates the production. This could be in the form of adding synthesized musical layers, recommending vocal effects, or suggesting alterations in timing and arrangement to enhance the overall musical narrative. Artistic Sensibility: Having worked with various genres of music, I understand that each song has its unique character and emotional resonance. I aim to maintain and enhance this essence, ensuring that the song's core emotional impact is preserved and amplified in the final mix. Professional Standards: I am committed to achieving a high-quality output that meets professional standards. Whether it's for streaming platforms, radio play, or live performance, I ensure that the song is optimally mixed and mastered to sound its best in all listening environments. Collaborative Approach: I view each song as a collaboration between the artist and myself. I take the time to understand the artist's vision, provide suggestions, and engage in open communication throughout the process to ensure the final product aligns with their expectations. Ultimately, I bring a combination of technical skill, creative insight, and collaborative spirit to each song, all with the aim of enhancing its innate qualities and ensuring it reaches its fullest potential.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My work process is a meticulous journey from initial familiarization with the project to the final pre-master output, where I strive to not only meet but exceed my client's expectations. Here's how I typically approach each project: I initiate the process by thoroughly studying the song references and notes provided by my client. This allows me to understand their artistic vision and the specific sound they aim to achieve. Once I've familiarized myself with the project, I move on to the initial stages of audio cleanup. This involves eliminating unwanted noise elements such as buzz, hiss, clicks, pops, bumps, and plosives, which might interfere with the overall quality of the recording. Following the audio cleanup, I focus on achieving a balance of volume levels across all tracks, utilizing my ear for balance and the natural dynamics of the recording before introducing any plugins. At this stage, I also start addressing performance issues. If there are issues with timing or tuning, I carefully adjust these elements to maintain a cohesive sound. In cases where multiple takes have been provided, I dedicate time to compiling the best parts of all recordings into a single, seamless take. Depending on the style of music and the quality of the recording, I may also replace certain elements if required. For example, drum elements like kicks and snares might be replaced to enhance the rhythm section. Once all instruments have been aligned and cleaned, I shift my attention to the vocals. I meticulously tune the vocals and consider potential creative vocal effects that could align with and enhance the style and theme of the music. At the final stages of the mixing process, I work on improving the track's dynamics, punch, and clarity. This is accomplished through advanced multiband sidechain and bussing techniques, as well as the application of any creative effects that have been identified earlier in the process. Lastly, I export the pre-master, ensuring it's ready for the mastering stage. If my client requests, I can also produce a processed master. By following this comprehensive process, I aim to deliver a final product that breathes life into my client's musical vision, achieving a balance of technical precision and artistic authenticity.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I operate out of a meticulously tuned home studio that has been designed with precision and accuracy in mind. My monitoring system consists of Genelec Monitors, an industry standard renowned for their superior clarity and detail, allowing me to capture every nuance in the sound that I'm working with. To ensure a comprehensive sonic perspective, I also utilize a Subpac for sub-frequency monitoring. This cutting-edge technology gives me an authentic representation of low frequencies, ensuring a balanced and dynamic mix across all ranges of sound. This software enables me to tame problematic frequencies with surgical precision. In addition to the aforementioned resources, my toolkit is always expanding. I'm dedicated to staying at the forefront of industry innovations, and I regularly incorporate new software and technology into my workflow. The aim is to consistently deliver the highest quality service to my clients, catered to their unique needs and creative visions.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Throughout my career, I've been profoundly inspired by a number of musicians and music production professionals. Their unique soundscapes, artistic vision, and innovative production techniques have guided my approach to music: Radiohead: The band's innovative and genre-defying sound has always inspired me. Their ability to seamlessly blend electronic and acoustic elements, coupled with their fearless experimentation with structure and form, has greatly influenced my approach to mixing and mastering.
