Mattie is an awesome guy to work with, really dives deep into what you want to learn about, whether that be guitar, piano, singing, music production, songwriting, and a lot more. I always look forward to our lessons, he is a huge help to my progress in music.

Interview with Mattie

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My friend recently commissioned me to write, record, and produce a love song for their grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary. I was really happy with how the final product turned out. I got sent a video of the grandparents listening to the song for the first time both balling! It made me really proud to think that my music could touch other people like that!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm constantly making music and songwriting for people. I'm currently working on my personal artist brand and first release called Mattie. I'm producing a 12 song album for an artist out of Iceland. I'm working with 5 or 6 artists right now to help write song lyrics for their beats, instrumentals, or projects.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I know the producer Simon Jacobsonn! He is a genius when it comes to mixes, and he sounds so good. He was a music production mentor to me a few years ago. I'm happy to see he's doing so well on the platform!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. The recreations of the classic analog gear are so good that it's hard to distinguish the difference. Digital gear saves me time and money and let's me get you your productions down faster!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise that I will do everything in my power to make the best music possible. If it takes 4 revisions to get what you want, I will still put forth my best every time!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love the creativity of being able to work with artists from around the world. The flexibility to make my own schedule and be my own boss. I also love making music with people and seeing their reactions to the work I submit to them!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: The most common question I get is: Here is my song? Can you write lyrics over it? The answer is 95% of the time yes!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that I know exactly what you want the song or lyrics to sound like. I will always give you the best product I can, but if you're not detailed in what you're looking for, I might not create the sound you want!

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What genre is the song? What do you want the song to sound like? Where will you release this song? What are some songs that sound similar that you want to sound like? What would you like the topic of the song to be? What are some specific words or phrases you want to include? Will you be marketing the song after it's released? What kinds of files would you like me to send you when I'm finished? What timeframe are you looking for to complete this?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be as specific as possible in your request! The more information you can give me, the better we can understand each other. If you want a lyric about wearing deodorant then tell me!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I'm assuming I wont have electricity?? Haha if that's the case I won't take any microphones, but all acoustic instruments so I can jam out with the natives. I'd take my acoustic guitar, piano, drum kit, acoustic bass, and my accordion. If this question is asking my 5 most used pieces of gear it would have to be: SM7B, Senheisser hd 650s, Nord Electro, Fender Strat, Adam a7x's.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started playing the piano when I was 6 years old and I haven't stopped since. Along the way when I was about 12 I started learning to play other instruments such as drums, guitar, and singing. When I was 18 I started my journey into music production. I continued producing, writing music, playing in bands all through college. After college, I became a certified music teacher and taught public school music for a few years. In the meantime, I was working on starting my own music business. Now for the past two years, I've been a full time musician creating content for social media, producing for other people, and starting my own private music school.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is laid back but determined. Is that what the question is asking? Haha my personal style of music is similar to the one I make most for my clients, pop and edm.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to work with Diplo. The variety of music projects he has including a comedy one, make me think that we'll get along great. I also really enjoy some of the ethnic EDM tracks his released on Major Lazer.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Choose amazing sounds. Many amateur songs that I've been sent, simply use bad sounds and theres not much to do to change them.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work on variety of music, but the majority of my clients make Pop, EDM, and Soft-Rock.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my voice and vocal production abilities. Paired in combination with my lyric writing abilities, my voice allows for top notch productions and sounds.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a fresh set of ears. A creative spin. My ability to play so many instruments, record them, and sing all allow me to create productions quickly that sound great. I also bring a good energy to the song! My lyrics can be fun hearted or serious, but it all depends on what the client needs.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: The work process depends on the task at hand. Most of time the biggest part in starting out is to determine what the client needs in their production or song. Making sure that we're on the same page is the most important thing before getting started on the song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I own and operate out of a professional studio. I have the ability to record live guitar, bass, electric guitar, drums, and vocals. The rest of my operation comes from in the box plugins!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Other musicians that have inspired me to play music and pursue it are: John Mayer, Bruno Mars, Lukas Graham. The production professionals I lookup to now are: Dave Pensado, Chris Lord Alge, Leslie Braithwaite, Max Martin

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common thing I do for clients is write song lyrics and top lines for their songs! My biggest genres are in Pop, EDM, and Soft Rock!
